Herman Williams Schrade 863

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Herman Williams Schrade 863

Post by jerryd6818 »

Since I first saw one, I've had a hankering for a Schrade 863 covered by Herman Williams with his gorgeous Sambar Stag. In spite of family issues, Herman agreed to do the job and I just got it in today's mail, just a few days over two weeks from the time we started talking about it. Great service. Great job. I'm tickled with it. The blades on the knife I sent to him were not up to his standards so he dug up a complete set of new blades and replaced them while he was at it. Wonderful.

If I don't forget. My plan is to come during the morning hours, probably 0900 - 1100 or 1200. Somewhere in there. Trying to get my grandson to go with me. Saturday is his birthday.

He turns 17 on Saturday and I'm sure he would love it BUT his mother wouldn't and he couldn't get in anyway. If he goes, I would rather take him across the river to The Rock. Just about my favorite place to go in Beloit.

Stunning stag, an exquisite pocketknife! OH
Deep in the guts of most men is buried the involuntary response to the hunter's horn, a prickle of the nape hairs, an acceleration of the pulse, an atavistic memory of his fathers, who killed first with stone, and then with club...Robert Ruark

I have a few "H.W. Schrades" and have chatted with Herman via email.
I had thought that Mr. Williams was mounting his special handles and then polishing the knife. However he does much more than that: he takes the knife apart, polishes everything, mounts the handle slabs & re-assembles the knife. This last step is more difficult with Schrade than with other folding knives. The Swinden Key needs to be lined up perfectly and then not shift even 1 mm as the bolsters, liners and blade are pressed together. If there is slight movement the result is blade play.
My explanation might be a little off but the basics of it is that Swinden Key makes it harder to re-assemble and not have blade play.
If i am thinking of bidding for one of his knives i send a message asking him to check for blade play. Herman says that some collectors do not mind a little bit of play, but it is the 'issue' that bothers me the most with any folding knife.

I have the twin of yours, Jerry. Mine, and now yours, are the only two 863s I have seen from Herman.

I am sure he has done more, but I haven't seen them.
