Re: Got pics of your Boker Barlow?
thanks for all the pics and infoTexasJack wrote:#3 Delrin, Carbon, steel center liner.
so the #1 with the ringed bolster and brass center liner you think is bone, good to know. that wrecks my idea that 2 pin handles are delrin, not bone
and #2 with steel center liner and delrin you think is carbon blade, that wrecks my fledgling theory that the steel liner indicates stainless
Im happy to be better educated, even if my guesses were mistaken
#3 is a new player, not pictured in the group shot, steel center, delrin handle, skinny tree, and you believe carbon.. thanks for all the pics and info
btw, I just the bid on that Ebay Boker, with no Boker USA stamp, bone handles with 3 pins, and no Solingen stamp. I make it possibly a 1940's knife, waiting to see the liners, they should be steel. I believe your latest bone Boker with 3 pins and the Boker USA stamp would be a 1950's model.
all good fun, thanks for sharing, will post pics when my Bone Boker arrives

Re: Got pics of your Boker Barlow?
Here are a few photos of a Boker Barlow I got off ebay for cheap, under $20. The seller said it had never been sharpened and had bone handles. Both not true. It has lots of scratches all over from being cleaned with some kind of abrasive, possibly a scotchbrite wheel, not sure. The plastic covers seem to have been melted with a torch on one side. The only tang stamp is the number 492. Overall a good lesson on how little a photo on the bay reveals, and what dishonesty exists among some of the vendors. This knife was sold by 30yearmanusmc.

There are some good points to the knife, solid snap, no wobble, sharp blades with nice steel and a long swedge on the primary. Although it has 3 pins on the handle, the covers are not bone. I believe all 2 pin knives are plastic handled, and all bone covers are held by 3 pins not 2, but obviously not all 3 pin handles are bone, some are plastic. Live and learn.
update, just to eat some Crow and admit my ignorance. The handles I now believe are stag, based on the way they absorb oil on the porous side. You can see in this pic that the oil is not sitting shining on the surface, even though I dabbed it on repeatedly, it kept sinking into the pores. So, Stag it is. That renews my faith in the rule of thumb that 3 pin covers can be non plastic, even stag:

Jon, I could be wrong, but I think someone replaced the original scales on that knife. Looks good though.jon_slider wrote:Here are a few photos of a Boker Barlow I got off ebay for cheap, under $20. Re: Got pics of your Boker Barlow?
Thanks for chiming in. Afaik at this point, it is original second cut Elk Stag Antler Bone by Boker USA, but if you have any new info about what you think makes it look like a replacement scale set, please share. I have not confirmed my opinion with Boker, but that would probably be the way to learn more.rangerbluedog wrote:Jon, I could be wrong, but I think someone replaced the original scales on that knife. Also if you have info, especially photos, of what you think the original scales would have been, Im always interested in learning more. I am familiar with sawcut bone handles on USA Bokers with 3 pins in the handle, and this knife fits that profile.
here is an example of a USA Boker with 3 pin sawcut bone handles
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RXAp ... E60_57.JPG
I am also familiar with 3 pin handled German Bokers that come is first cut Stag, but those have the Solingen tang stamp that the USA model does not. Here is one that I believe was made by Boker under contract for AG Russell. Note how the German ones don't have the swedge on the primary like the US version. Also note the difference in the shape of the German made Pen blade tang
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4E7w ... 524_57.JPG
Here is an example of the German Boker with 2 pin clear Delrin handle. You can see the similarity in the primary blade and pen blade, to the AG Russell above.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-SNsw ... E60_57.JPG
a trivia bit about the USA Boker Barlows, they have the swedge on only the mark side.
and trivia bit about Boker Barlows, both the pen and primary blade are the same thickness. On many other barlow brands including Russell, Remington, and Camillus, the primary blade is thicker than the pen blade. On the Bokers, the primary blade is only as thick as the pen blade. So Boker primary blades are thinner than the blades on other brands. One way you can spot this difference by looking at the space between the liners at the pivot end with the blades closed.
Here is a photo, left to right the knives are:
Case Peanut which also uses thicker stock for the primary than the pen blade (the pen is on the pile side), the 3 pin Boker with second cut stag, a TC Barlow by GEC, a pre 1933 straight line Russell, a 1920's Remington, and a delrin handled Camillus with 2 pins in the handle

the originals might have looked Something like these, I think.

Anyway, think what you will of the authenticity of the 3rd cut stag Boker Spear. I think your worn stag Sheepfoot is a beauty, congrats.
Here is a recent Bone Boker Spear that came through my hands. Its on its way to Patagonia, with a friend driving a Van.
One thing I don't really like about these Bone Bokers, is the pull can be very hard. But the Old Bone is always beautiful to see.. and Im a fan of the long pull nicks.
fwiw, I believe Boker started the Tree Bolster in 1953, and went to Delrin covers sometime in the 60's
