Boker Stamps, Etches and Shields

Post by trail »

Hi fellow Boker fans - Here is something that might be fun and worthwhile. Let's have a thread where we collect all our stamps, etches and shields in one place with as much information as we can give. I think this could develop into a great research tool. I know most of this has been posted before in various places at AAPK, but it would be nice to get it all together.

Let me lead off with the newest Boker shield, the 140th year commemorative. Everyone probably already knows that Boker Solingen has made knives continuously since 1869. This year they are doing a series of 12 commemorative knives to celebrate 140 years of manufacture. I don't know if this shield is only being used on the commemorative knives or all their production this year, but I think it looks classy.

Very good, Hawke! Now tell us the years of production for each shield, LOL. I'll bet that one with the little trademark registered sign is for a Boker USA, land of the free and home of the lawyers.

We're off to a flying start.

Here is a stamp from a Boker Arbolito, the pattern being what they call a Gaucho and we would call a Sodbuster Jr.

Does anyone have the knife world article about the Boke tang stamp and shield information that they wouldn't mind to share? I got the very next addition of knife world and missed the addition about Boker. Thanks.

Thought I'd add a few more shields to this bunch:

The mysterious Henry Boker Shield. I've seen four of them. 3 of the 4 were 5252 half-whittler patterns. But I just got this one on a stockman! circa 1980s is the general consensus... ::shrug::

Here's an old Boker with an uncommon shield. Many of the cutler's from Boker's factory (including their foreman) went to work for Remington when Remington began making cutlery. I wonder where they got the idea for Remington's acorn shield?

The acorn on Boker's knives was slightly more elongated than Remington's.

Here's a wild one for you. Whip out your copy of Mark Zalesky's Boker Tang Stamp article from Knife World magazine for this one. Compare the tang stamps and dates in the article to the ones on the 1981 Limited Edition knife. Shows me just how hard it is even for Boker Solingen to keep up with the history of this company.

Of course they were limited to only three blades. ::shrug::

By the way: This knife as shipped from the factory would have had two shields "glued" to the handle. The old tree logo on the left, and the new logo they used in 1981 on the right. You rarely find one with both shields still attached. The joke is that the little velvet bag in the box wasn't for carrying the knife in, but for keeping the little shields in when they fell off!

Just an update to this thread: The United States senate ratified the Trademark Registration Treaty on September 3, 1975. You can sort of figure then, that a shield without the trademark registered symbol was made before 1975 and with the trademark symbol was after 1975.

This also applies to the TM symbol. My understanding is that if you use the letters TM, you are claiming the trademark as yours, but it is not registered. If the R in a circle is used, it is a registered trademark.

Thought I'd revive this old thread with a new shield I saw on a 9885 pattern for sale on ebay.

Here's the link for more pictures.
http://cgi.ebay.com/BOKER-U-S-A-PREMIUM ... 4aa71c4380

The shield is unusual. First one like this I've ever seen.
With the Boker USA tang stamp, this knife is post-WW2.
I think the handle is celluloid and there is a lot of shrinkage. Don't know when Boker stopped using cell....
I'd guess this knife was made somewhere between 1945-1965 ????? ::shrug::

Interesting combination of BOKER USA tang stamp and Boker Germany shield. Possibly a replacement shield?
What say you?

Just saw a new tang stamp and shield to keep up with:
http://www.boker.de/us/pocket-knife/bok ... knife.html

Looks like Boker has a new low cost option. Note the different style tang stamp, and shield with GERMANY under the tree. MSRP is in the area of $40!
New for 2011? Anyone know anything about this line? Look for pattern numbers 110720 thru 110733 on Boker's website.

I don't know anything about that new congress knife Blue but, if they would put a spear blade as one of the mains and use carbon steel instead of stainless for all the blades, I'd buy one.

I've gotten a couple of their small stockman's. They're German made Tree Brand and so far, I'm not disappointed. It's a bit unusual though.
