Best stone to sharpen with?
Best stone to sharpen with?
What's the best stone or kit out there to sharpen with for the money. I just got a Schrade Walden NY with a somewhat dull 2 1/2 blade I'd like to Whittle a ball and cage with. I prefer something used and older without the antique price tag. Thank you for any advice.
Re: Best stone to sharpen with?
What do you guys think of that Lansky kit vs an older stone in a wood case?

Re: Best stone to sharpen with?
Seems most prefer the Lanksy system. I am a fan of it. I am also a fan of traditional sharpening stones....

Re: Best stone to sharpen with?
Welcome to AAPK. Glad to have you aboard.
I prefer the Lansky system because I can't hold a consistent angle. I must warn you, it's not real great on small (narrow) blades.
If you can hold a consistent angle, hand sharpening with progressively finer grits of sandpaper, crocus cloth, wet 'n dry, etc mounted on a piece of plate glass will put an edge on a knife blade that will cut you just by looking at it.
My Lansky setup.

Re: Best stone to sharpen with?
Thank you. That's good to know about it not being great on small thin blades. I was going to buy one buy I think I will keep looking.
Re: Best stone to sharpen with?
Welcome here.
In your continued search I would recommend hand sharpening on stones with progressively finer grits that will put an edge on a knife blade that will cut you just by looking at it.

Re: Best stone to sharpen with?
Thanks Joe, any stones you recommend? I like the looks of the old vintage stones in a wood case I see on ebay but have no idea which are good to use .
Thank you too Jerry. I was thinking of going with the Lansky but maybe I will go with a traditional stone. What do you guys think of the rod sharpener like the Steamboat?

First, I would take advantage of Scotts' generous offer of his stones. Double sided stones will take you a long way.
However, if you plan to whittle, I would think you would want something that will give you a much more refined edge. A polished edge. You will want to research and find finer grit stones that are mined from earth (Arkansas stones) or maybe man made water stones. Stones in boxes allow only one side for sharpening. The same is true for stones that are glued? together. Stones by them selves allow sharpening on both sides and their edges. Big advantage. Especially in the more costly fine grit water stones.

Re: Best stone to sharpen with?
I messaged Scott to say thank you and accept his offer , I rarely hear about offers like that let alone receive one. I'm thankful for his offer on the stones and the help I'm getting here on AAPK. I'm pretty sure my girlfriend thinks I'm off my rocket but I'm having a great time in this new hobby thanks to the good advice.
I'm definitely going to look into finer grit too because I'm interested in whittling a ball in cage I believe it's called. Where's the best place to learn about the differences in grit and stones?

Re: Best stone to sharpen with?
A search in google or here at AAPK will give you some information.
My way isn't the only way. I like stones because of the old timey tradition and they are incredibly effective.
Don't use grinders!

Re: Best stone to sharpen with?
Thanks Joe. I'm still so new I'm not sure which I like.
Here's another newbie question, why is the pm I sent Scott stuck in my outbox but hasn't gone to my sent box. I sent it. Does it stay in my outbox until it's received or did I miss a step? Thanks!

Re: Best stone to sharpen with?
I can't help with the PM question other than crushing the screen with a large paving stone.
I hope better advice follows.

PM stays in your outbox until it's accessed/read by the recipient.

Re: Best stone to sharpen with?
Wow! Is all I could say when I opened up the two gifted packages that arrived an hour ago from Jerry and Scott.(Jerryd6818 /TripleF)
I told a good friend about my new hobby yesterday. I said I can't believe these guys are just sending me stuff to help get started. He said that's pretty cool that they are that into their hobby that they go out of their way to help out a new guy like that.
I completely agree. I've never seen a more helpful group. I really want to say Thank You to Scott and Jerry for taking the time and even the expense to give me the items in the picture below. I especially loved the band aids that was a nice surprise as was the shammy to place under the stones.
Thank you Jerry and Scott! And also a thanks to the others with helpful advice. I feel with all your help I'm as prepared as I can be to start practicing!
Thanks again!
Sincerely,
Pete
