Re: what type of hatchet are axe is this
Youse guys can come up with some of the most off the wall stuff. At first I thought it might be some variation of a brush ax or a froe but that didn't pan out. Neither did searching on images of adzes, axes, shipwright's tools, etc, etc.
Judging from the eye on the tool, I would think the handle would have been more like that for a froe.

No clue of the purpose of this axe. But definitely not a firefighter axe.

Thats different for sure. Its more like a brush cutting tool than anything else with the extra arm that sticks out to pull in and hold.
I have something similar but need to go find it...and I will.
I did go find it and I'll stick with the brush or cane cutter idea though I've never seen one like yours.
Wouldn't mind being corrected if someone does know.

I kind of think it a tool for squaring or limbing logs, and the hook on the end is for rolling the log over after one side is squared. Just a guess!

I wouldn't think the hook is the right shape for rolling a log, I've rolled a few, and they have/had other tools for limbing and squaring [hewing] but if nothing else bringing this thread to the top again might help someone else see it and identify.Dinadan wrote:I kind of think it a tool for squaring or limbing logs, and the hook on the end is for rolling the log over after one side is squared. Interesting cabo5150
Wild guess here but thinking a froe ...
Here's a Burkinshaw fruit tree grafting froe - obviously smaller with abit of a different design but the wedge on the end is for opening slits in the branches.. the OP has same cutting blade and what looks like a wedge to me for prying ..

I'm also thinking some type of froe. Froes were specialized for many uses, from shingle-making to grafting trees. The end of the curved part not being more tapered has me stumped though, and thinking it's not a grafting froe. It does appear to be a tool for working wood.
