The picture is a little too dark for me to see clearly but it looks like it may be real.Easy way to tell is to rub the material briskly with a dry cloth and if it starts to smell it is a synthetic.Real bone or stag will not emit an odor. I usually use the,"tip of the tongue" test by touching the tip of my tongue to the material after rubbing it.If it is real nothing will happen but if it is plastic the solvents in the material will cause a slight burning sensation to my tongue.

Or better yet, under magnification, look for haversian canals (blood pores in the bone showing up as dark spots).

Did Victorinox ever use bone or stag in the first place? Or even imitation bone or stag?

Checked with Josh (junebug) who used to be our resident SAK expert. He's still an expert, just not resident anymore. Josh was kind enough to get back to me with this info:

Knife is the Victorinox 108mm Hunter.....also known as the Safari Hunter
It was part of the "SAFARI SERIES"
This model added a Gutting Blade and imitation Stag Antler scales to the Safari Trooper.

Sooooooo , IN SPANGLISH = EL Plastico (Cellidor) Mi' Amigo

Cool knife..... sought after even.
More than happy to help you any time I possibly can Bro!
(side note- lol- wore my USMC shirt from sons friend who was stationed in San Diego till last year , on St. Patties Day, and it made me think about yer old ugly ass, WELL , not yer ass but you in general :) lolololol .... )

More info from Josh (junebug)

"Yes Vic had every handle material any other maker had if not MORE (still do) , We just dont see them much in USA as they didnt come here till end of WW2 when troops seen em and brought em home/told stories of em' ....... remember they have been making knives since the 1800's and usually before MOST USA makers/factories .... and still going STRONG , DAILY :)"

Real stag handled Victorinox
