Pearl "Tooth" stamped Scissors/Knife

Post by djknife13 »

Has anyone seen one of these, particularly marked Tooth. I can find nothing in my reference books or on line of a company named Tooth? There is nothing else on the knife/scissors. It is well made with no country of origin. The 2 pen blades have square kicks and one appears to be a wharncliff or tiny sheepsfoot shaped blade. Any ideas would be appreciated. Right now I clueless. ____Dave

For the sake of a guess, I'm thinking it came from Germany, but no clue as to the company.

It's English, some of the stamp is missing.

Thanks Miller Bros. How do you guys know all this stuff. There's a tiny bit of the word under Tooth... that I could see and the rest of his name would fit perfectly. Levine has nothing on Toothill but this gives me somewhere to go from here. English is way better than German which is what my first guess and Dales was.____Dave

Tweedale's has two listings for Toothill:
- Robert Toothill - listed as a Manufacturer of First-Rate Electro-Plated and Britannia Metal Goods". Says he advertised in the the local directory (Sheffield, I presume) up until 1860 and is presumed to have died shortly after.
- Henry Toothill - started around 1837 and retired by 1881. Listed as a manufacturer of Pen & Pencil Knives, Scissor Knives, Knife Scissors, Rule Knives, Desk Knives, Erasers, Tumble Downs, Castrators, &c, &c".

Very interesting piece of cutlery. Tweedale does not make any mention of marks used by either of the Toothills or of either of there marks being purchased or used by subsequent cutlery firms.

Here is another piece marked Toothill VcrownR.Quill knife with matchstriker nail mark and ivory letter opener.Handle appears to be genuine tortoise shell;although the usual "layering" isn't readily visible. Not really sure which Toothill made it as the VcrownR mark encompasses both people.

Thanks Dan for the information. That really helped and it now appears I'll have to change from Robert to old Henry on my records unless I find out different. That's a great knife7knut. I love these old pieces of history you can actually hold in you hand. ____Dave

You are welcome, Dave. However, I did very little, Dimitri came up with the Toothill name and all I did was to look it up in the book.
