What stainless steel did Schrade Cut Co. Use

Post by louied »

I have a Schrade Cut Co SS 8813 and was wondering the type of stainless they used back then as I can not find any info from the 1926 catalog or anywhere else. The knife I have is from the 1920's from what I researched and been told because of the older jigging. Thanks for any help from the experts.Lou

It's pretty well known that imperial schrade used 440A stainless, but I have no idea what was used in the cut co era. 440A may not have existed then ::shrug::

May I ask your source for that Paul?
440A only has about .75% carbon & 440C has 1.2% carbon. 440A has great corrosion resistance, great for a dive knife, but not so good for a cutting edge. 440A is usually 55-57 Rockwall C.
440C is less rust resistant, but can be hardened to 59-60 Rockwall C. Much better for use in cutlery.
Most people I know who are very familiar with Schrade believe Schrade+ steel was 440C, perhaps a proprietary formulation of 440C.

I don't think one can reasonably expect 440A to perform as well as the Schrade+ steel used in the Uncle Henry line performs.

Dale I could be remembering it wrong. I have seen a sheet somewhere on aapk or bladeforums with all of imperial schrades steel specifics. I'll try and find it.
