2 OT Good or Bad

Post by tjmurphy »

I need your opinion on this 2OT, has a new master been welded onto an old tang? Note the imperfection on the main blade on the pile side. Would Schrade have left this one go out?

That blade looks correct to me. The imperfection you point out looks odd, I'm not sure what to make of it.

Could be a welded blade. The grind lines at the tang look a little wavy to me, I might expect cleaner grinds on a blade that is supposed to be unused.

Just mt opinion, though.

I believe Schrade annealed the tang on their blades so they didn't wear out the backspring. That is most probably what caused that.

Do you know if this was done for a certain period of time then stopped or throughout all their years of production?

I'll have to check on that.

Annealing, in metallurgy and materials science, is a heat treatment that alters the physical and sometimes chemical properties of a material to increase its ductility and reduce its hardness, making it more workable.

I believe the knife has been cleaned and new glaze finish applied. The choil is about all gone on both blades showing blade loss.It should be deeper than it is.

Paul, the tangs were always annealed. This brought their hardness on par with the spring and also made it possible to crink the blades without snapping them in half. Pretty much every traditional pocket knife company anneals the tangs.

Thanks Eric. I remember a GEC video that shows their production processes that included annealed tangs and why they do it. I was always curious if it was a standard practice in the knife making of old.
