Foreign sailors knife? CCRICAMA

Post by almyjmoore »

I got this interesting knife a flea market today. I'm thinking it's probably foreign because the letters on the tang don't seem to form a word [CCRICAMA]. It reminds me of a sailors knife or a rope knife. It is extremely tough and snappy with a kind of military look and feel. The backs of the blades are 1/8" thick. It feels like good quality. Does anyone recognize this?

Very typical of a European style rigger. Here are a couple of mine, an ABL which is on the same pattern as yours, and an Alpha which is more on the American pattern even though it was made in Germany.

I don't know who stole what from who or which came first but that is the same basic pattern as the British Army Knife which, except for the can opener (or 'tin blade' if you will), has changed little since The Great War (World War One).

It would appear that the original patterns were introduced by the English. Of course on their voyages around the world stealing everything that wasn't nailed down and conquering everything that was, the design could have come from anywhere and just been put into widespread use by the English.
