'40-'64 CASE 6250 TOENAIL QUESTION
'40-'64 CASE 6250 TOENAIL QUESTION
I purchased on ebay a wood handled Case 6250, supposedly pre '64. On receiving the knife I did some research and it seems that the Elephant etch that appears on my blade dates the knife to no earler than '74- is this correct? Also the shield is the one without the centre circle around the word Case. There are no dots apparent on the tang stamp, which reads Case XX over U.S.A, which initially led me to believe it was an early example, but is it possible that if it is a '76ish knife that the 4 dots are hidden by the bolster?I am trying to work out if the seller has taken me for a greenhorn (it was my first Case toenail purchase) or if he's made a mistake and shipped me the wrong knife.
Can anyone help with the dating of this knife and sort out this confusion?

Your knife would most likley be either a 1977 or 1978 . Most of these were hard to determine due to the dots being hidden under the bolster . I searched for a long time to find one each of these that you could read the dots for my collection . You are correct concerning the time of the introduction of the elephant etch . If you paid no more than $125 for the knife and it is in mint condition , you didn't do too badly . If you paid more , I would persue a complaint and offer to return the knife or pay no more than $100 for it .

Bob,
On the XX Toenail stamp, is the XX even visible? I have an old one and can't see a thing other than case?

Re: '40-'64 CASE 6250 TOENAIL QUESTION
Thanks everyone for confirming my suspicions. It's a bit complicated, ( most scams are), I won a knife on ebay for $99 USD from an auction with several Case toenails up for sale. On winning the knife the seller offered me a pre '64 version for $75 higher than my winning bid, telling me what a bargain I would be getting as they were worth over $250 (greed mullet kicks in). The knife arrives and I'm very happy until I do some checking, start collecting more case toenails and get wise to the dating system. I then realised that the knife I had paid $175 + p&h for, seemed to be the knife that I had originally won for $99!! I've complained to the seller and he's taken the high moral ground and says I got a bargain no matter year it is !! I have bought more Case 70's toenails since this one and paid between $85 & $110 in mint condition, beautiful knives....It was after I took a close look at a pre '64 on ebay that I became convinced that my knife was not that vintage!!

I hope to resolve this with the seller, who's stalling me at the moment, but I think I'm within my rights to open a dispute if he won't play ball. Thanks again to all you helpful knife nuts on AAPK, YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

If this question is for me , I have several "XX" toenails and on some of them you can only read the CASE but no "XX" while on others you can easily CASE over "XX" or you may only be able to see the top tips of the "XX'S" .

Re: '40-'64 CASE 6250 TOENAIL QUESTION
Hey Bushdocta how did you even know what knife you were bidding on? I saw 4 pics with toenails and one was just a blade of a 70's toe the other had Pakkawood handles and the third was a older (the reason I say this is of the color of the bone) the fourth had about 9 toes in it. That right there would keep me from even considering a bid with this seller. I think he is trying to deceive just by posting all those other pictures. I think a seller should have only 4 pictures in a description unless they are showing a crack in the bone or a pit in the blade something of that matter I think they should just show a Mark side with blades open a Pile side with blades open a close up of the Tang and one of it closed. Here's one I owned a while back. The tops of the XX's were visible but just barely.

Bob R.,
Sorry! Yes it was for you Thanks for you reply. I thought that was the case with the XX visibilty. Mine is much like Forensic Jims. The tang stamp has a lot of pitting but I suppose the XX's may have been visible at one time, or perhaps not. Unlike FJ's mine isn't nearly as pretty... Nice one FJ

Re: '40-'64 CASE 6250 TOENAIL QUESTION
Greetings all, thanks for the really helpful responses and the good photography! I've been in contact with the seller of this knife and it appears to be an honest mistake, mind you the fact remains that I did pay $175 for a 1977or8 Toenail and he seems to be in no position at the moment to refund any of the money- I'll chalk this one up to experience!!! I've been buying quite a few knives from the USA and all transactions have been very smooth and honest, so I guess I've done well so far. Thanks again to everybody, it's very handy to have so much experience to draw on !!! Only problem is I STILL don't have a pre '64 Toenail in my collection, ah well the search goes on!!! All the best from the Bushdocta Downunda
