Any Henckels Collectors Here?
I recently got a Henckels Sodbuster and I don't believe I have ever seen another. It is pretty much a standard sodbuster except that it is a lockback. The other wood handled sod busters I have seen were not locking. Anybody run across this before? Also, it came in a Henckels box and it is a design I have not run across before.
Any ideas as to age? Value?

Re: Any Henckels Collectors Here?
Paladin I have this years new Bear & Son catalog and they offer a lock back sod buster pattern. I think it comes in yellow composite or carved bone stag handles. That sod buster pattern is a good EDC knife. It fits about every knife cutting job that needs to be done. I haven't seen that brand of sod buster lock back before either but then again I don't collect that brand of knives. Nice knife you have there.

Re: Any Henckels Collectors Here?
Thanks, Aimus. I wasn't sure if anyone here collected Henckels. I was hoping someone might be able to date it by the box. I have seen the red boxes and the green boxes but I have never seen this box before.
I also have several other locking sodbusters but none have the traditional wood handles. This knife seems rather unique to me.

Re: Any Henckels Collectors Here?
I have some J.A. Henckels, one of my favorites is a Pearl Whittler. They make alot of cool Kichen knives also. (Don't own any)
I don't know if any of their knives are made in Germany anymore. Goins says not since 1960.
I am a fan of Paul A. Henckels Solingen though...they are completely different and very cool since 1887.

Re: Any Henckels Collectors Here?
I have a few Henckels knives but the boxes on mine are are a different pattern with red lettering on a white background. Mine are more recent production within the past five years or so. Either your knife's box preceeds that or is some special run. It's a dandy!

Nice knife and a great utilitarian and stylistic pattern.

I believe the red and white boxes were 1970's era.
Re: Any Henckels Collectors Here?
I have about 25 Henckles and every one is worth the money I paid for them.
All mine are newer ones. most with the white and red box.
Not like yours. I have seen some on ebay but let the pass by.
Perhaps unsure of where it was made.
Here is a dandy Henckles I like the little people on them...

Re: Any Henckels Collectors Here?
Your Sodbuster looks identical to the ones my friends, Mike Smith and George Mizrany, bought in Dallas in the mid '60s. I lost my first one by foolishly having it in my back pocket when I reported to MCRD San Diego on 1 Apr 69. Dumb! Just DUMB! I bought one to replace it when I got back from Viet Nam but gave that one away to a young Marine who needed a good knife and haven't seen another one until I came across your post. Mike still has his. I recently got in contact with George via Facebook and he asked about "our" knives. He has been a missionary in South Africa for the last 14 years and has misplaced his. Is yours for sale?

Re: Any Henckels Collectors Here?
I recall seeing one like that listed in an outdoor catalog in the mid 70's (maybe Eddie Bauer?). It struck me then as interesting because it was a Henckels and because it was a lockback version of the sodbuster.

Re: Any Henckels Collectors Here?
I'm not a Henckels collector (although my wife has a nice collection of them in the kitchen).
I only have one Henckels - a gentleman's knife which is 3 1/4".....has a really long nail file on it. I just bought it cause I liked the bone scales...nice color and jigging. It has the gemelli (twins) tang stamp on both blades, and the model 1750 on the back of the main blade. Don't have a clue as to how old this one is?

Hi Gino, Johnnie,
Nicht Rostend translates as "not rusting" (looked it up on a free web translator)....."friodur" is ice hardening...."Hardening of the steel (at 1060° - 1080°C = 1940° - 1976°F) dissolves chromium carbide molecules, resulting in optimum no-stain properties. In 1939 Zwilling J.A. Henckels was granted a patent for a new hardenign process: "Ice-hardening" of cutlery has ever since added a new dimension to the manufacturing of quality knives with no-stain properties, under the registered Zwilling J.A. Henckels trademark FRIODUR. The steel is FRIODUR; the high-carbon, no stain alloy able to resist staines and rust while holdinga professional edge. A first in cutlery."
Cool knife!

Thanks Gino. ....Nicht Rostend means none rust..or rust proof.
Friodur means ice hardening.
Heres the stamp on the spear blade mark side.....normal stamp.

I was thinking almost exactly the same thoughts as Gino on this one. 1900 - 1930.
Very nice one UNC!
