Repair/restore 1958/9 Imperial Boy Scout Knife

Post by big50_1 »

I received the aforementioned knife from my dad when I was a scout. Rediscovered it recently and would like to repair/restore the knife. Any thoughts on this? Imperial is gone but the restore would be for sentimental reasons. Sincerely, Lee

Hi Lee,
Welcome to AAPK. If you could post a picture or two of your knife it would help a lot in steering you in the right direction. (Also we love pictures around here)

Lee, welcome to AAPK. We have several knife mechanics on the forum capable of satisfying your restoration needs but as Phil said, pictures, pictures, pictures.

Appreciate the welcome. Here are some pics. The scales appear to be laminated wood. This is one tough knife
as I used it a lot when I was in the scouts. My dad had it when I was in the military (24 years). So it has seen some use. I cleaned it a bit but it still has rusty blades. My cleaning has been a little polishing and oiling. I've learned over the years to not screw with something I'm not familiar with.

That knife is in pretty decent shape as is. I'd suggest you take a No. 2 lead pencil and use the pencil point to scrub the rust still on the knife. The pencil lead is hard enough to remove the rust but will not scratch or harm the blade steel in any way. The marks it leaves behind will wipe right off with a little oil and a soft cloth. Once you've done that I'd simply oil and rub a bit more and then oil the joints. It does not appear to me the knife is in need of much more than that. Those handles are rosewood by the way.

Very nice knife. Follow Phil's lead and that's all it needs ::tu::
