AnotherTL-29 Mod?

Post by #goldpan »

I finished this one this morning. I meant to make a Barlow out it but came up a bit short on the length of the bolsters. Still I think it turned nice for a user. Modded the screwdriver into a a bit of a drop point for doing heavy work. The blade tip is much thicker than the rest of the blade making more suitable to heavier cutting chores that could be hard on thinner blades.

I took many more pictures as I prepped and assembled it as well as the pics I took of the stag handled TL that I made for my brothers birthday earlier this week. At some point I plan on posting a step by step on disassembly, cleaning and prepping parts for re-assembly as well finishing. If the blades had come out brighter on this knife I would do some more finishing and detail work. When I first cut it apart I thought the blades just had a heavy patina and shine real nice. But as I started sanding I found there were a bunch of micro pits that I did feel were worth the effort to fully eliminate. Would have taken way to much metal off of the blade. All in all I like the way it turned out.

Really Nice Randy ...especially like the care you took matching the grain in the wood.

Thanks Dale, Brumbydownunder. The wood is old semi rotted oak barrel staves. Can't stand to see anything go to waste. Turned out better than I thought it would. Its finished with several layers of C.A.. Several coats. Sanding between coats. Ending with 1200 wet and dry sandpaper.

I like it! I have a few modded TL-29's. There heck for stout. I especially like that secondary drop point thing you did. Very nice.

Love how the wood turned out, and the bolsters look fine. I think I did a couple like that also.

Nice work.

Thank you Glenn. I have 6 more L's to mod, more chances to get it right! I have a decent quantity of those barrel pieces. I like it as well and want to see if I can duplicate that look. So far every time I use the stuff the look of the grain comes different. :D
