Interesting knife tool

Post by just bob »

Saw this on Ebay and suspect the seller is right. Maybe a QC tool used in knife production?

If I had to guess, I'd think the seller has it right. It looks like an angle and length gauge for checking backsprings. Put a known good spring on the pegs, adjust the front part with the screw, then you can compare your other springs to make sure they fit up the same way. The cutout under the spring I think was just for ease of getting the part on and off the tool. You wouldn't really need to test the flex and temper of each individual spring, since your pre-tension is set by adjusting the rocker pin hole in the frame, not the spring itself.

That's neat ,looks like it would have been used to check the length of the spring, the angle on the front of the spring and possibly how much bend the spring had to make sure it would have sufficient tension on the blade. Bet it came from the Schrade factory

You guys have it right, it's an angle and length gauge. They're generally only made for one pattern, and are non-adjustable. The screw is likely there to make it easier to remove material from the gauge plate if an adjustment is deemed necessary for the pattern, or if the plate gets worn. The two pins on either side hold it firmly in place. The spring should follow the outline scratched into the gauge, a warped spring would show up instantly. There's usually a correctly ground sample spring attached to the gauge, usually on a ring that's easily opened so that the spring can be removed to dial in the length and angle on the belt fixture. That's likely what that large hole is for next to the date. I'm pretty certain it's not a Schrade gauge though, Their gauges looked very different.
