How do I remove Black pitting Stains ???

Post by stagman »

Howdy guys, figured instead of bothering Dale or Kaleb or the like,
I would post a question here in this forum...
I have a 110 yr old Marble's Safety Axe that has nasty knida pitting
all over the head,, its Black as coal in color...
back in the day the axe was chromed, and the handle is nice, shiney and such,
but that head with them big dark black blotches on it is terrible
How could I remove these ugly black spots on the head of this axe..
any info would be greatly appreciated...
also,,,want to let all of you know that I and am sure all the other members really
enjoy these before and after pics of the knives all you guys restore,, just blows me away !!!
You all know who you are, thanks to all the knife restorers on this site that show us their work...
Will

Pitting is holes and that can only be removed by friction......grinding wheel, sand paper, etc.

Rust can be reomved pretty much by soaking in vinegar for a few days.

I am closing in on finishing one myself and just had the head soaked on veintgardx for 3 days.....

pits can only be removed by removing the surface metal down to the lowest part of the pit. This is more do-able on axes than knives because of the amount of material you have to work with, you just have to be mindful of markings etc.

A buddy of mine bought an older Ithaca shotgun that was in great shape, except for some pitting on the receiver. He sent it to a small shop in Michigan I believe, that does laser welding and had the pits filed in, then he reblued it and it was as good as new.

That's the only way I know that you could get rid of the pits without removing metal. I think it costed him $75 or so.
