Schrade double end not closing.

Post by bvagell@gmail.com »

Body: I recently bought a "3 3/8"" Schrade Double End with Sterling Scales antique automatic knife. Only to find out that one of the blades will not stay closed. Can you tell me how to fix this problem,is it simple or involved tearing down the whole knife which I don't want to do,if I don't have to! any advice you can shed on this will be greatly appreciated

Sorry, I don't have a clue about your knife, but I can say Welcome to AAPK!
There are several great knife mechanics that frequent these pages that should be able to steer you in the right direction.

There are some fine mechanics that deal with autos, but I highly recommend Kaleb (MuskratMan). He repairs and rebuilds autos, and he may also have a few tricks to try first.

I would first try soaking it in warm soapy water and try to loosen ant crud that may be in the mechanism , then blow it out with compressed air concentrated on the "slot " at the bottom of the tang which can bee seen with the knife closed and the slot that can be seen with the blade open about 1/2 way also the release button area. if that does not do it the knife may need to be taken apart and repaired, good luck

go with what wiseguy said, soak it in hot soapy water then blast it with air, if you don't have any luck lube it up really good with something like breakfree or quick release in every available opening then blast it with air again. If that doesn't fix it it'[s probably mechanical. In that event I would recomend you send it to me for evaluation. It sounds like the sear notch is either plugged or chipped. Or the sear itself is encrusted with rust preventing it's smooth transition from the upward to the downward position. It has to be one of those 3 things if the knife does indeed lock OPEN but not closed. If it doesn't lock either way the sear spring could be broken. a picture of the knife to see it's overall external condition would be helpful in narrowing down the possibilities
