Purina Knife
Purina Knife
I feel selfish coming up here and looking at the work of others and never posting any of my own. I'm a hobbyist and not a knife repairman. I enjoy hitting the flea markets and yard sales looking for a knife with a broken handle or blade that can be put back into use by someone. I stumbled upon this Remington Purina at a knife show in a dealer's junk box. Both sides of the handles were broken, the blades are worn, and the punch is short. Perfect for my purposes. I wish I had a punch to replace the damaged one with but I don't. I do have an original Purina side panel from another knife and that makes things so much easier. The pictures show the knife and the steps I went through in restoring this. The last picture is a thorn amongst 2 roses and shows the knife I'm working on with 2 originals from my collection. I still have a ways to go on my knife and the final hafting and buffing have not been done. I wanted to go ahead and take the pictures and post this as it is raining here today and I can't do much else. A lot of trial and error in this and you can see some of the aborted panels in the pics. The handles are made from Lexan.

That is impressive Bob!
Where did you get all the extra Purina handles, did you make them?
If you post the thickness of the tang on the punch you need to replace I will see if I have one that might work for you.

Dale I just have one extra original Purina side panel. I scanned it then cloned it with a photo editing program. I wish I had tweaked the color a bit more before printing them off. It's a hair off.

Re: Purina Knife
That is very clever!
Are you using plexaglas over to cover the scans and form the handles?

Re: Purina Knife
Great piece of work on this. Genius, as others have said.
Re: Purina Knife
Sorry guys - no genius going on here. I learned all I know about computers and software from my kids. Funny how things evolve. Now that I have moved up to Windows 8 it is my nephew's 8 and 10 year old kids that bail me out. What will they think of next? I just hope it is easier instead of better.

Great work Bob! Maybe it's time to let you trade me out of my hoard of Purina Knives since I'll probably never get the time to work on them anyway.
Re: Purina Knife
Hi Bob,
Great work and a good idea to clone the handles.
What do you do with the cloned paper then? Put it in clear epoxy or what?
Thanks for the info,
Tom

Re: Purina Knife
What you have to find is the right color of paper to print the inserts off on. You can use photo paper or something like that. I was never able to match the exact color I was looking for. The closest I ever found was a manilla file folder. Typing paper is too thin. Once you find your paper and get them printed off then you have to coat them with something or else they will get stains. I used spray glue on both sides and then let it dry. What I used as the clear coating is Lexan. It was easy to get it worked and the scratches out. Good luck and post more pics.
