Here is my contribution to the Utica thread. Frontide tang stamp is : "PAT. PEND" over "UTICA CUTLERY CO." over "UTICA N.Y." on both blades. The backside master blade tang stamp is :"30". Would anyone have any idea when this one might have been made?

Starting around 1930 Utica patented a series of bolster designs, I have seen three different ones.

So I would date the knife to the 1930`s , they were not a big seller and were eventually discontinued certainly by the start of WWII.

Thanks M.B. for the information. Looks like I need to do a little more digging on Utica myself. My curiousity about all these particular aspects of different knife companies keeps getting stronger with knives that I run into and see here. What a great place to learn! Thanks again! I am a little suprised that they were`nt great sellers though.....the knife is very eye appealing to me.

Here are a couple of uncommon Utica Lockback Folding Hunters, top is black composite of some sort and the bottom is great old Utica bone.

Everyone,
Thanks for checking them out. Bob, both knives are built with a little more heft than a Cattaraugus King of the Woods, heavy duty liners and a serious backspring and blade.

Mike, that's a real beauty. My, how the times have changed. From what I've observed, there were several shoe companies who put out knives advertising their product. Now, they wouldn't be caught dead using a (gasp) weapon (sic) to advertise. ::facepalm::

Thanks Bob and Jerry , in every older knife I acquire I am tending more to convert my collection to vintage. They don't do such knives at present. This teardrop is a jewel :)

Just got my first Utica. It's one of the presidents collection of knives that's talked about one the first page of this post. It's the candy stripe 2 blade Whittler, it's very near mint. It has numbers painted on the back of the main blade. Thanks chris

Hi Mike,

Once you get hooked on the vintage knives.....well, theres no comparison as far as I`m concerned. You just can`t get the same looks out of knives made today that are called "hand made' when "hand made" today is with tools that are completely different than what was used years ago......the fine real "hand made workmanship" of knives made in the past, as far as I`m concerned is priceless and uncomparable. Then when you add the history factor, the patina, the steel, etc etc etc....well, as you can see I`m sold on the "oldies".
