Old Knives with Rare Tang Stamps
Re: Old Knives with Rare Tang Stamps
Thanks for the welcome. The closed length is 3 3/8". The stag has really deep crevices and is really nice.
Re: Old Knives with Rare Tang Stamps
Heres one I've had for a while, August cutlery Co.
MonteRe: Old Knives with Rare Tang Stamps
Well, I'd like to thank Dale for selling me this great Honk Falls! I suspect I caught him in a weak moment, but when I saw the pattern (I am kinda focused on Serpentine Jacks of late), and then the tang stamp, I made an offer I hoped he wouldn't refuse!!
It was nice to visit at the Oregon Show Dale!!!
The bone handles have a chip in the back, but they swell nicely at the bare end, feeling great in the hand!

It is a nice knife - pocket-smoothed and still snappy, I consider myself lucky!

Re: Old Knives with Rare Tang Stamps/Pratt & Co.
Here is an ivory Tuxedo marked on both blades "Pratt & Co. Buffalo". Levine says "retail jeweler, 1830-19??, probably made by Ulster".
kj
edit to add: these are not good pics. The ivory has excellent grain, lovely pieces but not evident as such in these pics.

Re: Old Knives with Rare Tang Stamps
Thank you Mr Upnorth (but not North of me).
Lovely amazing Schrade Cut Co Buffalo Cut. Co. knife. It looks just like it was made Today ! If i had this knife it would be The Best knife in my collection.
Thank you for posting it. We regular collectors need to see such truly mint knives to know where the very top end is. i.e., until a saw a knife in as truly 'perfect' condition, i did not realize that such perfect 'mintiness' existed and so would describe a lesser condition knife as "mint".
Mr. Upnorth's knives serve to keep our standards high.

Re: Old Knives with Rare Tang Stamps
Living in Vancouver, BC, which seems to have little pocketknife history, it was quite a thrill to find my current home town on a tang stamp. I like Buffalo tangs like the ones above, as I was born there, but this one brings us to today although made some time ago!
I have lost the feature (temporarily I hope!) for blowing up my scans, but the tangs say,
Main:
Lewis & Co, Ltd
Vancouver, B.C.
Pen:
Sheffield
Eng.

Re: Old Knives with Rare Tang Stamps
"Vancouver" as a tang marking must be as rare as possible. Is the logo a bong & bongo drum ?
Actually there are very few knives marked with the name of any Canadian city. I have a couple with "Montreal".

I will, as soon as i find them. They are in the large 'refugee' camp, the place for knives with no real home.

Wow, that's an old Case ! Very good condition. I would think you need a pretty deep pocket to get something like this.

Re: Old Knives with Rare Tang Stamps
Hey Guys, Had this Peanut for about a day to feast my eyes on and oodle over before letting the new owner appreciate it
Stamping on small blade is "Platts with a C underneath it" and All I could make out on master was something like "Platts Bros" and something beneath "Bros",,,,,so hard to tell what it was.
Kind Regards,
Mark
