Re: Old Knives With Jigged Bone Handles
Tim, you're totally breaking the rules with that beautiful stag on a very cool knife.

Re: Old Knives With Jigged Bone Handles
Joe, I sincerely apologize for any misconception, as I truly was not sure if it were bone or stag. Though I am glad to get any and all opinions concerning this knife. Sorry if I've derailed the thread, Tim

No worries guys, thanks for the interest, Tim
Re: Old Knives With Jigged Bone Handles
Look at the front side of the knife, sure looks like jigged bone to me.
The back side, i am not so sure, looks more like stag.

Re: Old Knives With Jigged Bone Handles
Dale, that was my concern also. Are you thinking rehandle? I'm new to Simmons(keenkutter) and this one has me puzzled.
Re: Old Knives With Jigged Bone Handles
I'd say that both sides are stag. Is it red stag or was it dyed?

Re: Old Knives With Jigged Bone Handles
As I look at the top and bottom edges of the front scale, I would have to guess that it is dyed. But that is just my guess. It is my understanding that back in the day, bone was referred to as "stag", so it is very confusing to say the least. But I appreciate all info, thanks

Re: Old Knives With Jigged Bone Handles
How can a 100 year old knife look so beat up and still have bone handles like these?

Re: Old Knives With Jigged Bone Handles
Posted this one over in the Robeson collectors forum but it fits well here also. I bought it mainly for the jigged "green" bone scales. They look a little darker in the pics than they really are. Just picked it up yesterday.

Very cool old jigged bone MB. Nice addition.
Mumbleypeg, great jigging on that. Really pretty color and pattern.

Very nice hunter Mike, and that Camillus is nice also.It doesn't seem who made,if it's old, seems it's beautiful.I like Camillus' old bone.
Nice Robeson mumbletpeg, they had some beautiful bone.
Dimitri's firing out some nice German heritage.Dimitri I especially like that hand done boneand absolutely think that Ulster is stunning, early Ulsters are great knives. That Lennox is what I,and a lot of others term pick bone, whether it had any handwork or not.
Delbert ,I have bought similar knives just for the bone handles.I agree,I don't see how it came through without being more pocket worn.

Re: Old Knives With Jigged Bone Handles
Very nice!
Isn't the jigging on the Cast Steel called "scratting?"
A very old method usually done by a knife or file, IIRC.
