One-Hit-Wonders

Post by dcgm4 »

In Levine's Guide To Knives & Their Values the author commented that he had only seen a Coquanoc Works knife only once. This got me thinking about brands I have only seen once. If you have a knife pattern or stamp you have seen only once then please post it here for all to see. And if you see a post and have a similar knife, then post it so that these knives are no longer "one-hit-wonders." Here are mine: a T. C. Barnsley toothpick from Oklahoma City and a jack knife by Kay Bros. of Red Mills, NY.

Very nice knives ::tu::

I've heard of Brown Bros knives (later Kabar/Union) before, but I've never seen another, maybe someone here has one.

Here's a lonesome Harness Jack. Bernie Levine owned it at one time, and now it's in my safety deposit box.

I forgot to thank you guys, dcgm and akc, for showing your rare ones. I wonder if PA has a Brown Bros.
Allow me to show you a Ralph Brown (I don't think it's any relation). Another HJ of course :oops: .

Osborne in Harrison, NJ is a maker of Industrial hand tools; leather, shoemaking and upholstery knives, but your Osborne is Clifton, NJ.
Hmmmm??
Dale, it looks like an Imperial, or Camillus knife, made for a novelty/gift/advertising business. That's what this Cline Stewart cattle knife is. Made in Germany for a toy and novelty company in Los Angeles, in the 50s. Didn't know where it was from, until I found this pencil on Ebay!!

That knife never fails to impress me. I still find it very difficult to believe that there are no other (or so few) Hudson Bay Co knives out there. Given the history of the company and its intregal role in Canadian society dating back to the 1600s, I would think that there must be other knives around somewhere. Thankfully, we have the pleasure of seeing your rare example. ::ds:: s-k

p.s. The archives of the HBC are now in Winnipeg. They may have old catalogues etc. In case you don't have this information already...

I agree with Smiling Knife. Not that I've seen one. Didn't they stamp there tradeing knives? They are a big outfit still. John

First I'd like to say awesome knives, everyone! Keep 'em coming! ::ds::
Dale, I've come across Osborne Co. knives before. The Osborne Company was actually an advertising agency that moved to Clifton, NJ in 1932. Their knives were contract knives (I've seen a few salesman samples) and most had advertising on them. Though I've come across a couple that didn't like the one pictured here. I don't know who made the knives for them but it was probably the usual suspects like Imperial, etc. The company closed by 1958.

OK here is mine a Maine Cutlery. It was a mark that JBF Champlin used according to Goins.

Also a JT Mount New Jersey. I think it was made by Robeson because I just bought a Robeson that is exactly the same.

Nice J. T. Mount! ::drool::
I collect New Jersey knives and your J. T. Mount is only the second one I've ever seen. Th other was a jack knife with broken blades and chipped bone handles. I doubt Robeson made it, Mount had his own factory in Newark. The factory produced knives beween 1885 and 1911. Gotta say I'm a little jealous of that one. :lol:

Thanks for the info on the Mount knife. I had no knowledge of the company till your post. Here is another pic of the knife, it has a covered back.

I'll post another one hit wonder of a Newark knife as soon as I get a pic done today.

It would be a treat to see the Mount next to the Robeson, if you can take some comparison pictures; pretty please! :D

Thanks Charlie, Here is a scan of the Robeson. I will take a good picture later in the week with both knives together.

The other knife is an addition to the one-hit-wonders, This is the tang stamp below:

That Mayeby is a beauty, Mike! I like the flat, squared bolsters. Too bad someone beat it up a bit. :(
How long is that jumbo Pen, Kaleb. Is that real horn?

This may not completely qualify, but I have never seen a Novelty Knife Co. marked like this.
N.C.Co over CANTON O. The uniqueness to me lies in being the only example of religious advertising I have seen. The Reverend evidently had gifts made up.

Here is one that is a total mystery to me.I have owned it for years and have never found any info on it.Not even sure I'm reading the name correctly:looks to be CORSEPIUS N.V. It is a rase knife and what is really unusual about it is the backspring is drastically tapered;narrow at the blade pivot and wide at the point to facilitate the hook end.
Sorry for the lousy pictures;I'm still trying to figure out how to take close ups with my new digital camera(the manual is 224 pages long!).
