Not Necessarily A Knife

Post by Miller Bro's »

I like collecting old knife related items as well as the knives that we are all familiar with. Back in the day some knife companies manufactured other items in their factory, not just pocket knives. Finding these items is not easy, one reason is probably because early pocket knife collectors were mainly only interested in just finding the knives not much else was being sought at that time.

I would like to see in this thread any items you may have that has a knife companies name on it, such as a pair of scissors, gun, tool, etc. Also any items or tools that were used by old knife factories.

I will start out with a mystery item, I have now identified it, but I will let you try and guess what it is. It was made in the John Russell factory in Turners Falls Mass. in the 1920`s I believe.

Looks like a glass cutter of some type to me.

Sure look like glass cutter blades and since some are more recessed than others, I'd say for different thicknesses of glass.

There are definitely different depths to the wheels (which look like glass cutters).
The hole in the center is hexagonal which likely means it could go on a shaft, but they do not want it to spin on the shaft. By turning the shaft on which Dimitri’s mystery item is mounted 60 degrees at a time, it would move the cuter from one cutter to the next, and could produce a progressively deeper scoring in thick glass.
I have cut a little glass and I know you can’t cut too deep at one time.

I suspect this is a cutter that mounts somehow, perhaps on a shaft, to cut heavy glass, maybe in sheets or glass that is being turned somehow in the manufacturing process.
That's my best guess. ::shrug::

Definitely for scoring glass.I bought a tool for my wife(who does stained glass work)that was used for cutting large diameter circles in glass. It had an adjustable beam to set the radius and a device similar to the illustrated one mounted on the outboard edge of the beam. This one allowed you to change wheels without disturbing the setting if one became dulled.I'll have to dig it out and post a picture.

The tool is clearly index-able with "cutters" (inserts) of progressive depth. It is similar to glass cutting tools, but I haven't seen many glass knives.

Was it "drawn" against bone or second cut stag to jig the grip?

Made by Will & Finck, and most likely the only thing I'll ever own made by that company given how much the knives go for. I guess I could try for one of those lime squeezers that show up occasionally on an online auction site.

I have posted these elsewhere but it was 2 or 3 years ago.
These are things from the Camillus 100th Anniversary, courtesy of Dennis Ellingsen of the OKCA.

This is a repair bag used at the Camillus factory. Courtesy of Tom Williams (CAMCO).
The repair could be kept in the bag/envelop and shipped back to the customer in the same bag.
The bag is attached to the envelop.

Either Dennis of Tom gave this patch.
Sorry, I don’t remember which one gave it to me.
