Thanks Guarddogg,

Thanks K7K, and that is a great knife you have there. I have an HW Mason somewhere, I will look for it.
I think that this pattern was a popular one for multi blades as they were actually using as a pen knife, sharpening quills, or other lighter duty tasks such as office work. Thus, having the multiple blades made sense so sharpening would not have to be as frequent. I think that larger, many bladed knives would have presented difficulty for the average person in regards to weight, and thus the people who would have carried, say a farrier knife, would have been few and far between. But, as the light duty office work of sharpening a quill or pencils was less needed in the more mechanized time post-1900 these 5 or more bladed congress or senator knives seem to be less commonly produced (not that they were ever "common"). And so, the many bladed, and heavy stock knives of the later time period, say 1890s on to about 1920s, seemed to be the ones being produced. These are just some thoughts. Cheers,

knife7knut - I like that knife. Interesting how the blade wound up perfectly triangular. It almost looks like it was made into a leather punch.

Have you ever seen the same knife similar to this one at a monthly swap meet, month, after month, after month after year from the same seller? You just want to buy it, take it home and give it a decent burial? ::pray::

John nice old jack. I would take a little off the kick on the pen blade and put that one in my pocket. Perfect EDC.

Great old serpentine John, the pattern of the wood grain is lovely.

Here is the Henry Mason Sheffield knife I referred to that goes along with K7K's 8 blade congress. This simple jack has iron handles. Tweedale lists John Henry Mason having lived between 1877-1930. In 1911 John Henry Mason was listed as an electro-plate worker.

Don't get me wrong fellas but I laughed out loud at some of those pictures.
As sharpening brings the edge closer to the thicker spine, isn't it better to get another knife?
These pictures say a lot about the bond between a man and his knife, second only to the bond between a man and his dog, I suppose. (I hope the wife comes in next. )

Nice old Boker, Cal! Hope you can salvage it but if not at least it's gone to a good home. ::tu::

I was going to put this in a thread I saw a while back on folding guards but it fits here too. It does have a neat guard. I believe it's English but can't prove it. The seasoned collector I bought it from guessed it was mid 1800's and that the lead patch was a common fix back then. It's just a cool old knife with years af stories we'll never know. ___Dave

Here's a beautiful and rare oldie that I've picked up (these are the seller's pictures). W.R. Case & Sons 8387 gunstock whittler. Like Cal said above about his Boker, I probably paid too much for it but couldn't resist. Still snaps like a gator. Blades are near full, but tip is broken on file blade. Mark side pearl handle is intact but needs to be re-pinned as it's loose on both ends. As you can see the pile side pearl handle is broken. ::teary_eyes::

I'd like to restore it. Probably nothing that can be done for the broken file blade unless a donor knife can be found. These are scarce as hens teeth so not much chance of that (plus all blades are stamped). I'm looking for someone willing and capable of replacing the broken pearl handles. ::shrug::
