Family hieirlooms are a link with the past, especially the hand made items.
This is my most prized knife. Made from a planer blade by my Grandfather Archie Edward Wright 1888-1981 in the 1920's

Bill, hold on to those memories. Pass along and keep them and the knives in the family.

Have a Robeson that belonged to my wife's granddad, he passed sometime in the 50's.
Have a couple of Case EDC's and a Primble EDC that belonged to my wife's Dad, he passed in the 70's.

Howdy folks,

I thought I`d share this story on how my Dad got the knife that you see in the photo`s attached. Dad was born in 1928 and as he and the family would always go into the corner drug store after Sunday church and have a soda fountain or ice cream cone. Well they had one of those contraptions that a person could put a coin into and then try to manipulate a big old crane to locations where they has different things like knives, small dolls, knick knacks and of course they always had one or 2 items that had some real value to entice the person to come back time and again trying to win it. Dad had his eye on thie old Imperial hatchet knife and of course the crane was never stout enough or fast enough to pick it up and drop it in the shute, but as Dad told the story, he would try week after week after week to get it. So, in the mid to late 1930`s as the depression hit everyone hard, Dad would spend his hard earned change on nothing but this old knife. Well, one Sunday, they went into the store and the owner told my family that due to bad business they were goung to have to close the store. Then, the owner went to the contraption and opened it up and took the knife and handed it to my Dad who was elated. He told Dad that while many people had tried to win that knife that he was sure that no one had put more money into that machine trying to win it and said that Dad deserved the knife. Well, many years later Dad got his knife collection out and was telling me the story on where he got this knife and I could just see the gleam in his eye as he handed it to me. It was the first of many knives that he gave me over the years and I`m sure that the reason I love collecting knives was in fact due to this story. I hope you enjoy the story and the photos.

Yep, Gino and Dale, it`s my favorite knife although I`m sure I have older and more rare knives than the old hatchet knife. Odd thing about that old hatchet knife also. Imperial double stamped it, apparently the first stamp was a little too light to suit them so they stamped it again. Everytime I pick up that knife I recollect Dad and my Grandads stories of growing up in the early 1900`s(grandad was born in 1908), hunting, fishing, knife collecting etc(grandad was an old coon hunter and I shot my first coon out of a tree at age 5 with his old 1908 Remingtom .22 semi automatic which is in my gun collection now). Both of them are gone now but the stories and hand me downs live on and keep their memory fresh in my mind. More valuable than anything to me.

That is so true Bob.

I have my Granddad’s .22 Remington pump. Dad gave it to me a few years ago. I must have killed 10,000 grey diggers (ground squirrels) with it when I was a kid. Dad told me one time that that rifle had probably put more meat on our family table than all the other guns we ever owned put together. It fed 3 generations of my family.

I am truly blessed that both my parents are still living and in reasonability good health. They are 82. They still have 5 acres but have gotten rid of most of the farm animals. They still have a dog and a few chickens. Mom likes the fresh eggs and I cannot remember when Dad didn’t have a dog, at least not for very long.

It is neat how knives, guns and other things remind us of the ones we love so much. I can pass the stories and the things on to my children, but I can’t pass the love I had for my Granddad. For that I have to pass my love for them on to them and new memories and new mementos so they will have the stories and love to pass on to their children & grandchildren.

Nice to hear about your memories too. Looks like we both had a deep love for our Grandads. I`s odd how I can remember his gestures, smiles, the odd way he held his mouth(sorta bit his tongue

) while peeling an apple. That same old .22 Remington ( and a couple of his shotguns) put a bunch of squirrels, rabbits, quail and pheasants on our table too!! In fact I can almost smell that squirrel and squirrel gravy cookin in Grandmas old cast iron skillet!! Man those were the good ole days!

Thanks Scott, glad you enjoyed it. Been busy as heck for a while(and just getting over a flu bug

) and thought I`d check back in and see what was going on and show a couple more oldies that I got pictures of. 1st is an old Joseph Rodgers-Cutlers to His Majesty(No.6 Norfolk Street Sheffield) and the second is an old James Barber ERA. All of the blades in both knives are tightfitting as heck and have incredible snap both ways. I`d really like anyone to chime in about any history or info on them since I can`t find much in my book. The Rodgers is bone handled and 3.5 inches long closed and the ERA is also 3.5 inches long closed and looks like maybe a horn(not sure) front handle and the backside handle is very old steel with J. Thompson stamped onto it.....think maybe it was replaced many years ago since the pins still have the little dent in from re pinning...but I suppose maybe someone just tightened the pins down?....wish I had more history.

Here is another oldie....probably not so rare except that is has the most stout and heavy duty master blade I`ve ever seen in an old military knife. Nice bone with just :"Made in USA" stamp. 3 and 5/8ths closed Made by Camillus? Any info is most welcome. Thanks,

Got this one yesterday.At first I thought it might be a Novelty Cutlery Co knife as I remember seeing this pattern in an old(1978)issue of Knife world advertising these(with decorative cel scales)for $9.95 each.
Eng the tang I see what appears to be "Standard Knife Co".Upon researching this name I find that this was the forerunner of Case knives.There were two stampings:an early(1901-1903)stamping from Little Valley and a later(1920-1923)from Bradford.
I have a PM into Steve Pfeiffer concerning this and hopefully he will be able to shed some light on it.

Here is a Union Knife Works, NYC knife. It is a little rough, but I think the blade configuration is cool. I know my scans don't show it, but the screw driver blade is beveled for wire stripping.
