Cattaraugus Cutlery Co. Little Valley N.Y. 1886-1963

The Cattaraugus Cutlery Company was started by John Champlin and his son Tint in 1882. It was first incorporated under the name J.B.F. Champlin and Son as a wholesale distribution company based in Little Valley, New York. The business proved to be a successful endeavor, and it soon branched into a knife production company named Cattaraugus.

They were in the attic of a hardware store in business since the 1870`s. It was closed in the 1960`s, but the building remained in the family till 2008. The building was going to be torn down and these were found and lots of old knife boxes, I bought them all ::nod::

The whole idea of putting a compass on a slab of metal was crazy. I have a couple that the needle will change position if you tap the handle but not free wheeling.

JKB,

I have never seen it in print but, I believe you were supposed to take the compass out of the knife and hold it in your hand for it to work. I have several of these and the compass pulls right out with your fingernails. None of mine were ever glued in. This would account for the ones I have where the compass is missing. The bone after many years would shrink slightly and the compass would fall out :(
