Re: Knives Made Before The Year 1960
Thanks David, PAL's are not highly collectible but they have a good history and their natural handles are some of the prettiest around in my opinion. Got my eye on another one (Bone Cattleman) here in Amarillo at an antique store, but the owner obviously thinks those scales are gold and not jigged cow bone! lol! It's been there for a year, however, and I work on him about once a month! If I get it , I'll post it as well. Smoke

Hey 'Smoke,
You ever make it down to Claude? Old Chester, has some neat stuff. He likes old watches most, but I bet he's got some blades there too. I ain't seen him or talked to him in about 10 years now. I guess he's still in bidness. His place is the old store right across from the courthouse on the main drag through town with the indian sittin in a rockin chair out front. His collection of stuff for sale is eclectic at best.
He's good folks.

Re: Knives Made Before The Year 1960
Jim Sargent included a section on PAL, with many photos, values, etc., in an edition of his
American Premium Guide to Knives & Razors.
I forget which edition, or if he ran it more than once. I have the book, as I have all his editions except the latest. I'll check it out if you like.
If you like PAL knives, it'd be a good book to own.

Hey Wullie, I go through Claude from time to time but I never have stopped to browse or shop. Next time i'm through, I will check and see if he is still open and what all he's got.
Charlie, I've got Sargent's 6th edition but that is the only one I have. I don't remember a section on PAL but I haven't looked at it in a spell. I will have to get it out and see. Thanks, Kelley

The section on PAL is in the 3rd and 4th Editions of Sargent's American Premium Guide To Knives & Razors. I don't know if it is in the 5th edition or not as I don't have that one.

Those are at the Steamship Arabia Museum in Kansas City, a place I highly recommend anyone anywhere near there visit. It is worth the trip... an amazing story and the family that runs it are accommodating beyond belief if you want to examine something closely

Re: Knives Made Before The Year 1960
I'm drawn to the older knives myself. Here are a couple in my collection: the knife on the left is an early horsemans. The tang stamp is illegible but the blades have a very strong snap still. The knife on the right was given to me from my father. He had taken it from a German soldier who had surrendered to him. The maker of that knife is, J.A.Schmidt, Solingen. Both are solid, well made knives.

Bull,
Awesome family history on the knife on the right!

Re: Knives Made Before The Year 1960
Have been looking for a place to show this little fella. 2 7/8" closed. The blades are 98-100%. Both blades work off of same spring. The large blade is a bit lazy the small one is a snapper. They both lock open and closed with mechanism. That is what the Patent number is for. The patents date is Dec 1942. The color of cel is a deep burgandy red made to look like tortoise shell(who knows it could be real, I doubt that though.) These two photos should enlarge twice. I scanned at 350%. LT only has one of these listed in his book with Schrade over Walden over NY USA. It is on page 87. His has a nail file blade, this one has a small pen and a smaller pen. The finish on blades is darn close to 100%, The advertising etch on main pen is in great condition. There are no marks on secondary pen. This is the first of the small Schrade two blade switchers I have came upon.
moss
Edit: Two photo's from Camera. I can't show handle color with this darned artificial light.

Moss,
Nice looking little switchblade knife
The handles are celluloid, and the burgandy color is an uncommon color to find.

Here are a couple real oldies, both are pre 1891.
An Ivory Ward Perly & Co. quill knife and a Tortoise shell pen, cannot make out the maker.
Check out the file work on the backspring

Re: Knives Made Before The Year 1960
This absolutely HAS to be a CASE TESTED "prototype" I mean after all how many of you have EVER seen such a wild combination of handle materials and a SAWblade combination tool such as this. I bet ol bRHETT59 or Murdle whatever his name is can make this one a REAL beauty and get some BIG bucks for it.
Just kidding.
A beat up and well loved old knife that someone decided to make suit his needs.
