I have been trying to talk an old collector out of one of those 4 blade Ulster's with the Be Prepared shield for a few years. Bail is still intact and not quite as well carried as your specimen. Very cool artifacts!

Awesome ronfish , any blade etch left on your friends old collectors knife ?
I would be very interested to know the history and how ulster was allowed to use the Be Prepared shield were these knives predate their Lisense to make an official knife .

No visible etch but there is some patina, so it is possible there is some trace under that. My understanding is that the 4 blade was unofficial as you suggested and the square notch on the screwdriver blade was for adjusting roller skates or auto lamps. Based on documentation I have read, indications are that "Be Prepared" was the BSA motto but the words themselves were not registered (at least at that time). Eventually, the BSA put a stop to all of the unofficial knives that used a "scout" reference. I believe that was in the War era......early 40's. These 2 knives are very early 1900's i suspect, probably teens or 20's if I had to guess.

I never collected the 2 blades because I have been a bigger fan of the 4 blades scout knives as a whole. However, in recent times, I have changed my tune in order to keep expanding the collection. I do have a really sweet Buffalo Bill NYK Co unofficial 4 blade.

I pretty much only have one of each but i get into the different variations of the same knife like slightly different blades and liner material .

Very nice , are they both brass liners or do you have the scarce version with a little different blades and silver liners ?

Ron, that knife is the "holy grail" for me! Have been trying to find one for several years. I have bid on a couple on eBay but did not win. Can you post a few more pictures?

Thanks,

A couple Challenge Cutlery silver and copper handle scouts .
Very similar to the Case Bradford except the back handle is reversed .

Both of these are the Case Bradford version have brass liners and the long pull. Did the Case version come with silver liners at some point or was it the Challenge Cutlery version? The Challenge Cutlery version has a main blade with nail nick in lieu of the long pull. I am unsure of the correlation between Case and Challenge, perhaps there is a Schrade connection?

EDIT: I see that you have a Challenge version with long pull. Interesting, never seen one with the long pull.

Yes I have seen and owned several case Bradford's with silver liners , one distinct difference was a shorter screwdriver and a slightly different can opener , a little harder to find variation .

Thanks! The only Challenge version I have seen previously is pictured in Holbrook's book. Until now I wasn't aware there was a copper version. Anyone know how Challenge and Case both came to have essentially the same knife? I'm thinking maybe one of them made them all, e.g. probably Challenge made them for Case under contract? ::shrug:: or as Ron suggests, maybe someone else (like Schrade or Camillus) made them.

Thanks to both of you for the pictures. Now I have even more to look for! ::facepalm::

I believe the knives were made by their respected factories because the blades are very different between the two makers but how they came to have the same handles is the big unanswered question .
As for the copper handled version I've only seen 3

I have never seen the copper version of the Challenge knife prior to Scoutknives posting the picture. That is a new one on me. However, I have seen the RS3333 with covered backsprings but have not come across one for sale. Yet. :)

Regarding the Challenge/Case mystery, it appears that George Schrade could be a common link, as he was involved with both Challenge and Case back around 1917. The interactions or contracts pertained to switchblades but who knows? I don't see much on the 2 knife makers crossing paths otherwise.
