Knife7knut & Dimitri nice puukkos.

TJ my thoughts exactly on the simple design of the puukkos. I think the design and use of climate friendly materials were well thought out. The birch bark handles have a really nice feel even in winter.

Mike Thanks for the compliment, I hate to be an enabler. I browse the forums here and someone shows a knife and the next thing I know I have one coming my way.

Been looking around at the Puukko's and they ain't cheap. Average about $100, most more - some less. So, here am I, a $30 knife guy! Oh what to do, what to do!! ::facepalm::

I had a pleasant e-mail this morning. I had written to Helle asking if they could tell me the age of my HE30 and whether or not an original sheath was still available for it. Seems like through some carelessness returning the knife to the sheath that a couple of cuts were made in the sheath and repaired with what looks like hot-melt adhesive. The repair is causing the abrasions you see to the blade in the photos. Anyway, here is their response:

"The knife is Sports knife No.30. It was one of our first sports knives made in the 1960s. It was relaunced in 2008 when we celebrated Helle´s 75 years anniversary. We can send you a sheath free if you send us your address."
Best regards,

What great customer service, even after 50+/- years of the sale.

Wow TJ that's hard to beat! Post a photo of the new one. Maybe you can snag a puuko on ebay or at a knife show or flea market for less?

I posted pics of this puukko from the maker Pekka Tuominen before, but I received it today and am adding my pics. The puukko and sheath are a work of art, I can't put it down.

How about this one, a Iisakki Järvenpää Aito with birch bark handles. I just received it as a birthday gift from Billswfl. :D The 3.25" blade is razor sharp and is full tang construction. This is a classic knife; compact, sturdy and feels great in the hand. The birch handles and classic sheath really set it off for me. Thank you for the beautiful knife Bill!

Ain't she sweet TJ? The pictures don't convey the nature of this knife. I saw pictures of it before I got it but it was better than I imagined. This knife just begs to be put to use. One of the nicest birthday presents I ever got. I just stepped into the Puukko Zone. 8)

Here's a piece from an older thread entitled "Scandinavian Fixed Blade Knives" from 2010 in this topic: I think that this is where I got the idea that "PUUKKO" was a Finnish term applied to a Nordic knife:

Hey guys, If you want some great info on making Puukkos and some tutorials and parts and supplies, google up Brisa Knife supplies. They are in Finland and have a great selection.

Here is a puukko I just finished...well it's 98% finished.... still need to peen the tang over. The first knife I've ever made.

Lauri puukko blade.

Guayacan & Ziricote handle with brass guard.

Sheath: Leather, wood, and deer antler.

No power tools other than a hand drill. Mostly used my Swiss Army Woodsman knife.
