Advice to a complete newbie - Hen & Rooster and Tree

Post by jmace57 »

Hello all. I am a complete newbie to pocket knives. My Dad didn't really collect them, but he did acquire them. He tended to give them to his friends.

I have 3 or 4 Hen & Rooster knives still in the boxes, and 3 Tree Brand in the box and about 8 or 10 "loose" Tree Brand. (Also there are Browning, Ka-Lok, etc but wanted to stay "on topic")

I would like to dispose of these - I am a gun collector rather than a knife collector.

Is there a good way to do this? Do I just take pictures and eBay them? Do I offer them on a board like this? I see people on line refer to knives with names or model numbers? I am disposing of 15 or 20 of my firearms through an auction house in a few months - should I just add these to the consignment?

I don't have to get the last dollar for these items - but I don't want to get "taken" either.

Do you all have suggestions? I have pictures of them taken and can post if that would be helpful.

THanks to all for your help and advice.

Jim, all I can offer, if I may, is that very often you'll hear regrets from folk who have sold their knives or guns.
It's likely you'll never get them back.
But if you must sell your fine possessions it's important to ask a lot of questions.
I hope you'll ask many more before you decide to sell.

Thanks Joe for the advice - I've found it out the hard way with selling guns and regretting it. I will still have the ones my Dad regularly used (and my grandfather's too). These are "spares" that my Dad picked up.

I'm a believer in getting them out there to people who will enjoy them - maybe someone needs one of these for their collection - they will get a lot more enjoyment out of them than I will with them sitting in a drawer.

Since you don't have a huge volume of knives to sell, I'd suggest you start by doing a completed listings search on ebay of similar knives to the ones you are going to be selling. That will give you an idea of the real world value in todays market. With that information, you'll be a much more informed seller and can decide how to proceed from there.

Thanks for the kind welcome and advice.

OK - here are a few pictures as requested. My camera crapped out (battery) when I took pictures of the "loose" ones not in boxes. The loose ones are all used. There are 4 additional Tree Brand, one marked Puma, with Germany stamp, and two that are I believe Henkel (one marked 1916 and the other 1918). I will try and post pix of those after camera is recharged. In the meantime, here are a few pictures of the boxed ones. The third one was one my Dad carried some and is not NIB like the other ones.

I'd recommend selling them on eBay. Best way to get top dollar, because you will have a larger audience. Take several good, clear pictures showing any stamps or markings. As far as patterns, what I'm seeing from top to bottom is a whittler, three canoes, and a couple of pen knives. You should get a minimum of $25 + shipping for each of those knives pictured.
Oh yeah, be sure to mention that they all have bone and stag handles. Don't sell them together as a lot, be sure to list each knife individually.
