Ludwig Groten knife
I recently stumbled upon this lovely folder, a Ludwig Groten from Solingen Germany. It has the nicest buffalo horn handle I have ever seen and has a fit and finish that is awesome.
It is said to be from the 1970ies allthough I am not sure about that.
Ludwig Groten was founded in 1922 and made cutlery under different names and brands. Since the 1980ies they gradually reduced their output until they closed their door in 2009.
Too bad as it seems that they were producing high quality cutlery.

Lawrence, the wars and the following hard times we had here in Europe left us with very few vintage knives. On the other hand I prefer the good conditioned stuff and let the rest pass me by.
Unfortunately this leaves me still with a lot of interesting and nice knives, so tendots might be right about my wallet!

Wallet in poor condition or not, I had to have this one! Another Ludwig Groten Solingen supposedly from the seventies. This one in mint with only a slight discoloring of the blade.

Re: Ludwig Groten knife - even more Ludwig Groten!
Those Ludwig Groten knives seem to come up more just recently. I have found those two with snakewood and ebony handles in a German knife shop. As it seems they are still be made by Hartkopf Solingen under the Groten-brand. However, I love these simple knives with all those different handels materials!

Skipper, I love that Copperhead pattern and those are all FINE examples. Great finds.

Thank you FD! Hartkopf still makes Solingen quality knives but unfortunately they are not cheap.

Re: Ludwig Groten knife
Thank you TJ! Right now there´s a Ludwig Groten on Ebay of which the seller claims that it was build recently but the blade used is still from old Ludwig Groten and was made in 1890 (!). I am not sure if ths could be the truth. There might be a lot of NOS stuff coming up in Solingen nowadays but that there should be blades that survived even two worldwars doesn´t seem very likely to me.

These look great. I agree with Mike, you have taken some very nice photos to show off these fine knives.

Re: Ludwig Groten knife
Hard to beat natural handle material for shear beauty. The snakewood and ebony confirms that.
Very Nice Capt.!
