These knives are made in Thiers, France by M.C.COGNET. They originated in 1927 for the colonial trade, and the strange handle etch is a Polynesian god. Evidently in later years they had other etches for the African trade, and the knives were enormously popular in north Africa. A couple of sites suggest a connection to the French Foreign Legion. These knives are still in production and mine are new.
This is about as simple a knife as you can find. It is a folded steel frame with a backspring inside and a pinned in carbon steel blade. The frame can be hammered down below the pivot to convert the knife to a fixed blade.
Here is a website where I found good information:

Re: Douk-Douks
very light knife, perfect as EDC, easy to sharp and not expensive
for the legion it's not true, it's more a civilian knife

Belt Holster - holster for Douk-Douk.
For over a year favorite pocketknife - the legendary French Duk-Duk. Since he has already appeared in the distant past, has neither a fashionable lock or one-handed folding system, or a clip for wearing on a pocket. The first two claims can be safely ignored because the knife is not urban tactics, but rather folding kitсhen knife showing exemplary geometry and characteristics of the whole complex of knife ideal for slicing eatables. The third problem is all the time did not give me rest. At the bottom of the pocket knife is not the place, he rips his pocket, and collects in the axial hinge pocket all dust, and because they cut foods. All holsters to carry in the pocket were to varying degrees, and half-measures do not survive.
