All About Pocket Knives

Been awhile since I've posted, I tend to use the site as a reference resource rather than a place to talk knives, I need to change that and contribute more so currently I carry a Large Sebenza 21 with ebony inlays, a ZT 0770CF and a ZT 0808, all 3 gifts from a friend. As soon as I figure out how to upload/post a pic I'll throw some pics up. In the meantime here's the direct links.

There is information in there covering posting pictures to AAPK from various devices. Scroll down and chose the thread that best suits your needs. Most all the images posted there will expand by clicking on them.

The CS Scimitar is my favorite "tactical" pocket knife. I seldom carry it today unless I sense a rogue ground hog who may be seeking revenge.

By the way. Is there a difference between "Modern" knives and "Tactile" knives? If there is, what is it. Looks like folks are posting Modern knives. I had it in my mind that a "Tactical" knife was combat oriented. And while we're at it, what features on a knife would make it a "combat" knife?

This is Wikipedia's definition of a "Tactical" knife:
"The tactical knife is a knife with one or more military features designed for use in extreme situations, which may or may not include a design capability as a fighting or combat weapon."

And what the hey is a "military feature"?

Edit: For me, a military knife is like a bayonet. Not good for anything other than stabbing someone or opening a can of C-Rats.

Most any knife can be used for most any purpose within its capapilities. But if we are going to use the word "tactical" as meaning anything beyond the marketing ploy it usually is, then I would restrict it to knives designed primarily to be used as weapons either offensively or defensively.

Perhaps it is easiest to recognize, as an example, the difference in design between a trail Bowie and a fighting Bowie. A trail Bowie may well be used as a weapon, but the properly designed fighting Bowie will provide distinct advantages to the user in a fight. So too with folders. I would refer the reader to the photo above in this thread of the CS Scimitar. I consider it tactical because it's primary purpose is as a weapon.

This Medford is designed and intended to be used as a tough cutting/chopping utility tool by the military... Every aspect of it is ultra rugged. Does this make it tactical? I don't know.

I don't know Dave but it sure does make it ugly (One Man's Opinion). I had a Chinese knock-off copy and it was the most uncomfortable knife in hand I've ever had. Had it about 3 or 4 days. Gave it away.

How well does the Medford slice apples though?

I remember when they said a Sebenza was overbuilt.

I don't think the Medford was made for slicing apples. At those prices they should include a complimentary Opinel for those kinds of jobs.

It's not a slicer... but I think you already knew that.

It'll cut and chop with the best, like I said in my post with the photo.

I'm not sure how to define what a tactical knife is or isn't, but the best definition I have heard of a tactical knife is:

"The knife I have in my hand when the situation turns tactical."

That makes as much or more sense than any other defination I have heard. The military knives issued early in WW II were hunting knives. They seemed adequate for the tasks at hand then....

I guess this would be my definition of the quintessential "tactical knife". It's very obvious it's designed from the get-go for maiming or killing.

I am not sure that I would like to carry any of those folders into combat.

The ones below are a different story: If you don't recognize the bottom Benchmade, it is an early Brend design. One of the first collaborations Benchmade did with a custom maker.
The large Camillus heat, a Zero Tolerance 0801and a Kershaw Blur BDZ-1 tanto
A couple by Columbia River Knife and Tool.
The top one is the M1, designed as a tactical knife by Greg Lightfoot and made in Taiwan.
The large one on the bottom is called the Desert Cruiser designed by Hammond. It was made in Taiwan.
Top – Ontario Knife RAT
Middle – Kershaw Blur BDZ-1 tanto
Bottom - Kershaw Blur S30V


The only one of these knives that I would be really reticent to carry in combat would be the Ontario. I have used the smaller version quite a bit, but not the larger version.
The Kershaw Blur may not be marketed as a tactical knife though I believe it would be every bit as effective as many that are made for combat.

Oops, I will have to be back in the day or two, I just remembered some more tactical folders I have.

So any large modern knife would be considered a 'tactical' knife. Hmmm

The RAT-1s I have acquired over the last year are all silky-smooth openers with stout, sharp blades and excellent F&F. I don't think I'd have any problem taking it into combat or survival situations over (preferably next to) my PM2 or any other modern folder I own. The RAT-2 is definitely on the smallish end, but the RAT-1 is perfect in my meatpaws for a hard-duty "tactical" folder and I have all the confidence in the world that it would serve well in such scenarios. Plus I don't have many knives with skinner blades (or combo serrated/skinner, for that matter) and none as large as the RAT's.

A possible reason for any difference of opinion may be that the orange RAT-1 you pictured is a Pacific Rim (but not Taiwan) "interpretation" of an Ontario-licensed knife, Dale. You can see the differences in the hardware, jimping, and (if next to each other) the OAL and thickness of the frame. Since almost all of my RATs were under $30 I have only sought out the genuine article and none have disappointed. I would trust any of them to do anything any large folder would have to accomplish. Ontario seems to have a handle on managing QC for their products coming out of Asia.
