Petty Knife

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Petty Knife

Post by jwnich »

I own a Case Knife circa about 1976 or 1977, that was produced for Petty Enterprises. I understand that there were approx. 150 of these made. It is an XX, with a picture of Richards 1976 Dodge and his autograph etched on the blade. It has the number 6143 on the toe on the etched side of the blade. Would anyone there have any idea what the current value of this knife might be?

The 6143 pattern is Case's Grand Daddy barlow, that's around 5 inches long closed. I don't think it's a XX era knife if it's circa 1976-1977. The Case XX knives were made from 1940 to 1964. It could have been a SFO (special factory order) knife that Case made, or the blade etching could have been done after market, meaning it was done after the knife left the Case factory. As far as value of the knife, you can check Ebay's ended auctions to see what these knives average bringing at auction. Ebay will give you more of a real world value of a knife, where as a knife book price will be out of date and useless sometimes before the book ever gets printed to be sold. Knife prices change that quick, due to the changing tastes and wants of collectors (not to mention the depression our economy is in now.). Good luck with your knife.

NOTE: The knife you described is not a Case Classic series knife. The original Case Classic series knives was made from 1990-1998. A Case Classic knife will have one of the older type tang stamps that Case Cutlery used in the early 1900's on their production knives, and the year it was made will also be stamped on the tang of the marked side of the main blade, like these examples 19USA90, or 19USA93. A Case Classic knife will also have "Tested XX" stamped on the pile side tang of the main blade above the pattern number of the knife. An AAPK moderator may want to move this post to the Case Cutlery forum due to this post not having anything to do with the Case Classic series knives.
