A 3-D Printed Digital Sundial

If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

A 3-D Printed Digital Sundial

Post by RobesonsRme.com »

I'm really blown away by what the computer assisted human mind can accomplish.

This little video demonstrates a digital sundial. It is not electronic. The display on the surface is created by the sun's rays passing through the device and being blocked or allowed to pass in such away as to create the digits.

It only displays the time in twenty minute increments and does not perform a full twelve hour span.

But really, who comes up with this kind of stuff?

That is brilliant! ::tu::

That took a lot of mathematics to figure out to get the correct numbers to appear at the right time and get the "machining" right.

Color me impressed!

All that technology, math and time spent to create something that is no more accurate than what one can make from a couple of sticks and a handful of stones or by using an old Daisy Buzz Barton model BB gun.

Earlier this year I read an article where they have engineered a way to 3D print human skin: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2 ... 090630.htm

The possibilities are endless like the Russian that 3D printed a house in less than 24 hours for under $10,000: http://www.treehugger.com/tiny-houses/r ... hours.html

Yes, it is basically a useless item, to which someone devoted a large amount of time , intellect and energy, not to mention cost.

But, it is impressive. ::tu:: :mrgreen:

So, I found where to order one, from the designer. It takes 35 hours to 3D print. He uses the more robust ABS plastic. I love the idea of having something like this that is totally passive. No power or winding. 20 minute intervals is plenty accurate enough for me... especially when I'm out camping. Just need sunlight. It works from 10:00, to 16:00. I might have to order one.... it's listed at $76.29
