I remember when....

If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

Do you remember Reddy Kilowatt? Seems like I remember a public service commercial starring Reddy and being featured in the REA magazine that our local Co-Op would mail out.

Reddy Kilowatt was part of my childhood memories in Orange County, Florida. We were served by Florida Power and Light from the time we got electricity around 1950 till we moved to the Panhandle. Seem to remember the little character being on the monthly bills ::shrug:: . Some areas of Orlando was served by Orlando Utilities Commission back then.

I recall Reddy K. We were served by West Texas Utilities and saw the icon regularly on their ads.

Eve Arden, the principal in the movie "Grease" played Our Miss Brooks.

The woman seemed to never age.

The squeaky voiced teen aged boy in Our Miss Brooks, "GOLLY! GEE WHIZ! MISS BROOKS!", was a young Richard Crenna, the Green Beret colonel in Stallone's First Blood movies.

And a starter button on the dash!

First car I owned was a 1950 Ford Custom 2-door coupe with a flat head V8 engine. No seatbelts of course. Paid $300 for it in 1963. The wipers worked off the vacuum from the carborator. When the wipers were turned on, if you pushed on the accelerator pedal just slightly, the wipers would stop. Let off the accelerator and the wipers would start again.

When I was about 16, I was going somewhere in the car with a date when it started raining. I turned the wipers on. Pushed on the accelerator - Wipers stopped. I banged on the dash, let off the accelerator - Wipers started. Next thing you know I had my date hitting on the dash every time I pushed the accelerator!

Sorry I told that one. ::facepalm::

My first car was a 1956 Buick Super. It had the usual button on the floor to dim the headlights but it also had a button down there that would change the radio station. Loved to hit that switch when there were people in the car that didn't know about it. It also had a "button" on the dash you pulled and through a cable it activated the choke. I don't recall if it had the starter switch on the floor or on the dash. Probably on the dash.

I had a '52 Buick Super, the starter was under the accelerator pedal.

::tu:: My '58 Plymouth had push button drive. I bought $2 worth of gas and 2 quarts of oil every week. Our 2016 Chrysler van has a button on the dash to start it.

my first car was a Buick special straight 8. Paid $50 and you could watch the street through the hole in the floorboard. Push the gas pedal all the way to the floor for it to start and hear the rods knock. My mom had a 55 Cadillac Sedan Deville with the Eldorado engine with 2 four barrel carbs. Almost rolled it chasing a car after I slowed down from 105 mph. to about 60 and an unknown curve said 35. you could watch the gas gage drop. 2 girls waved at us from the back window as they passed us. First time driving by myself after I got my license. ::facepalm::

Remember when almost all men wore hats and women wore dresses or skirts, even while doing housework (yard work was a man's job). In those days folks dressed up to go to a ball game

I remember not only when men wore hats but many times I would observe men "tip" their hat as they passed women on the street.
