I Think I'm Happy With This One

Post by tjmurphy »

Just bought off eBay this ULSTER, 10th Mountain Division, 1st Special Service Force. This model has the outside liners made of brass. Been wanting one of these for a long time and I think I got it at a decent price.

I'm not a big "scout" knife collector, but I do keep an eye out for those. I've never yet seen one in the wild! I'd be pleased as lunch with it and I know you are too!

Thanks fellerz ::tu:: I'm eager to get this one in hand. From what I've been able to find here on the forum, this is a Type 1. I don't know if that means it is the older of the three or not, but I doubt it based on the can opener. Even comes with my favorite handles.

TJ, nice.

I think the first issue knives had the Phillips screwdriver attached to the bail.

But, I am not at all knowledgeable re' those.

Very nice knife. I am ignorant on the history; I just know the tang stamp on yours is pre-1941 sale to Baer family. Hoping the knowledgeable folk will amplify this thread or direct us to older thread. ::tu::

Awesome TJ, love that heavy-duty bail! Is the phillips screwdriver welded or secured with pins? Always nice finding a hens tooth!

Hey Charlie, thanks for your input, I don't know a lot about them either. Read here, this is what Knife Nut had to say about the models:

I don't know, don't have the knife in hand yet, but from the pics it appears to be welded.

I Think I'm Happy With This One You have every right to be happy that is a Beauty!

I wondered why a knife of that vintage would have a phillips head screw driver??? So ... as you do I 'Googled' it ...

Found this on another forum ...

PS I expect that you know that the phillips screwdriver was for either adjusting the ski straps or the lengths of the metal "shoe" to fit the boots.

Dimitri, what do you find unusual about this one? A while back you posted a pic of five or six that you have/had? I'll dig the thread back out and post it.

Tom, I am just joking around a little bit

I use to persue these but have lost interest in them at the moment, I probably have ten of them by now ::doh::

To me yours is late war due to the can opener and the jigged bone. Nice find ::tu::

::dang:: you need to stop picking on us old folk. ::facepalm:: I kinda figured it was late WWII based on the can opener too. But, 10th Mountain IS 10th Mountain. Been wanting one of these for a long time.

 I wouldn't pick on you my friend ::handshake::

If you look at the picture I posted in the link you provided, the knife in the middle lying down has the same jigged bone, can opener, nickle silver bolsters, etc. After the war they lost the flat steel bail and put on a normal round nickle silver bail and sold these to the general public, I have a few of those and the blade is etched Abercrombie and Fitch and one Sears ::nod::

Watch out these are more addictive than the electrician's knives you collect!

I don't expect to get too addicted to them.....too expensive for my bargain-hunting blood!

Don't they all have jigged bone handles?
