Re: What is your holy grail?
As many of you know, last year my Holy Grail was delivered (see pictures below) but as it turns out, it wasn't my Holy Grail after all. You see, I'm just the short-term caretaker of this historical piece that will be making it's way on permanent loan to the National Scouting Museum. The Boy Scouts of America plans to move more than a century of Scouting history from Irving Texas to New Mexico, to the Philmont Scout Ranch near the town of Cimarron in northern New Mexico. An expansion of the Philmont Museum and Seton Memorial Library is expected to begin next year to make room for the Boy Scouts' collection, which contains more than 600,000 items — including the nation's largest collection of Norman Rockwell paintings, the first Eagle medal and nearly every uniform in Scouting history.
That said, I have been pondering whether or not to seek a new Holy Grail, the current thinking is....no.

Re: What is your holy grail?
That is definitely a Holy Grail knife Tom. Mine Wis the Remington R4466 I've never seen one in real life. But it's definitely my goal to get one.
Re: What is your holy grail?
The bar shield is pretty nice. Will you open it so we can see how full the blades are? Maybe it will look better open. ___DaveMiller Bro's wrote:This is my latest holy grail knife.
Re: What is your holy grail?
I really haven't been collecting knives long enough to get any "holy grails". I've seen so many great ones since I've been coming to AAPK It's hard to decide. That said I do have lots of grails: a Haskell Minnow, a Mettlach "rugby" stein, a Narragansett indian head bottle opener, a 3 inch Coe's monkey wrench, a Christiansen agate Guinea (that's a marble)... It's nice to have options. I need to mention that I'm married the top of my list.

Re: What is your holy grail?
A couple of years ago there was a "unicorn" thread which I believe would equate to "grail". I listed 3 knives at that time. http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kni ... rn#p438332 I have knocked 2 of these off my list, as well as a couple more that I didn't know should have been on my list.
Still looking for the R4466 - I hope I see it before Keith does (lol). And I'm adding the Case Clasp Zippers (5172 & 6172).

Re: What is your holy grail?
Those are some nice ones on your list Jerry. As I read everyone's list there are some amazing knives listed. The quest for that rare knife to go into each of our collection interests me. I think back to when I first started collecting and it was a 6437pu. Interesting how our desires will shift and change in time. Good luck to everyone this next year in finding that special knife

I've been lucky to find most of my grail knives, but the one I haven't been able to find is a Tested XX WinterBottom 6375LP

Re: What is your holy grail?
I would be ecstatic to have any 6375LP, but I don't think I could ever spend what it takes for one in excellent condition or better so that's why it's not a grail for me, just too unobtainable. I do keep hoping to find one in decent shape for a cheap at an antique shop or something thoughjlw257 wrote:I've been lucky to find most of my grail knives, but the one I haven't been able to find is a Tested XX WinterBottom 6375LP

Re: What is your holy grail?
I have two or three Grail knives:
#1 Schatt and Morgan TL-29
#2 New York Knife Company TL-29 (I am reasonably certain NYK made a TL-29 though I have yet to see an example).
A Schatt and Morgan TL-29 that was on eBay last year. I may have just got another Grail knife on eBay that I didn't even know existed!
I am waiting for the knife but I do have the sellers pictures.
The brand name is Forval, stamped on one bolster. TL-29 is stamped on the opposite bolster.
The knife is all steel so it appears to have been made after the start of the war.
Has anyone else seen the Forval brand before?

Re: What is your holy grail?
It's funny how your list changes as you progress through your collecting life. I remember when I first started collecting my be all end all knife was a Case XX Large Red Bone Texas Toothpick. Well I have been through 6 or 7 of those now in search of the most pristine example and when I finally found that one I discovered that there were so many other beautiful patterns that had moved to the top of the list.

Re: What is your holy grail?
Gosh, there are so many! Like many of you my tastes have changed over the course of time, and I try to keep my desires hemmed in by what I can reasonably afford (stay at home wife and three little boys with big appetites lol).
But the one constant that doesn't change is a XX era 6375 with matching true Case red bone scales. You know that light strawberry looking color that brings a premium? I have a few XX 6375's and even one with that color bone on one side. But I don't have one with that color on both sides.

Re: What is your holy grail?
My grail list has not evolved at all. Marked a few of them off the last few years. Here is current list...
1. CASE Stag 10 dot Cheetah Proto WITH Saber Blade. 4 made.
2. CASE Ivory 10 dot Cheetah Proto. 4 made.
3. CASE TESTED Lever Lock Switchblade 5171L. ? made (only seen a few).
#1 and #2 would likely cost 6 to 7 thousand dollars. # 3 would be about half of that. At one point in my collecting days, I would have dropped that kind of cash but likely would not do so now.
Jerry
EDIT: To clarify, 1 and 2 would be 6 or 7 thousand each, not combined.

Re: What is your holy grail?
It would be hard to put down that much for knives when you could get some really nice guns for that kind of money. As much as I love knives I think guns would be a better choice in that price range, like a pair of colt pythonszp4ja wrote:My grail list has not evolved at all. I am with you. I have a 6" Python circa 65' and a 4 inch Diamondback circa 68' that were my Dad's and of course my my treasured guns. I carry the Diamondback at least once a week.KnifeSlinger#81 wrote:It would be hard to put down that much for knives when you could get some really nice guns for that kind of money. Main reason I said "but likely would not do so now" is because I been buying guns instead of knives. Bought 4 knives last year and spent about the combined purchase price of the 3 knives in my grail list on guns, ammo and shooting accessories in just the last 12 months. Mostly SIG.
Crazy what the cost of an unfired or even fired Python is these days.
Anyway, selling more than I am buying knives right now to fund my gun addiction.

Interesting to read all of these! It's pure evil! and it is feeding my bad habit.
I've been wanting an original V-42, that was from the original production run of about 3000 units, that WR Case did under contract during WWII... circa late '42, to late '43. Pricing is all over the map, depending on condition and provenance. $5K is not uncommon.

Ya man! I've watched all the videos on the Devil's Brigade and what they accomplished. How they did it, is beyond my comprehension. Those were some tough SOBs.... and much, much RESPECT! This knife symbolizes their bravery and sacrifice for us. Interestingly, it was a joint USA/Canadian fighting force of true, tough outdoorsman, that were specially recruited and trained to form this First Special Service Force.gsmith7158 wrote:Nice Dave! Did I draw you to the dark side with your first CASE? Welcome aboard if so.
I would love to have one also. For now, I have to settle for my 1998' reproduction that my Dad gifted to my now passed Green Beret Brother in Law. He son gifted to me after he passed. I treasure that knife. He had a collection of about 20 or so and an original was likely in there.

Re: What is your holy grail?
Well hard to choose one holy grail knife - anyway once you obtain what you think is the holy grail another takes its place as the holy grail - part of the disease I guess ... I would love a knife from "Smith’s Key or Explanation of the Manufactories of Sheffield in 1816" - one of what they call a pocket knife, sportsman's knife or pen knife (the latter has some real multi-blade beauties)!!! I came pretty close on this quill knife but would prefer one of those others in the book and I do have some favorites in there. This quill (G-crown-R: 1820-1830) has tortoise handles, gold bolster and a sterling silver band, old stovepipe kick - abit worn but still has great snap and no wobble - not bad for almost 200 years old... lucky local find and not for alot of cash at all - I was told later at a knife show that it was worth 20-30 times if not more than what I paid .... anyway here is the pic of the old quill knife -
And thinking about it there are others not from Smith's Key that I would consider a holy grail knife as well that I would jump on
Cheers
