Two of Them Today

Post by tjmurphy »

The postman dropped off two small packages for me today....................

First is a Schatt&Morgan Chris Wolf. I've been trailing one of these knives for the last year or so and, thanks to our friend, P.A. Knives, one has arrived to play with his cousin, Jess Crouch. Thanks a lot David for selling me the Chris Wolf. ::tu:: ::tu::

The second dropped off today is a John Primble, Belknap Hwd. Mfg. camp/utility, No. 3335 with a star to indicate Boker made. Apparently the master has been reprofiled to a clip blade but was done pretty well. Without doing the dreaded hot pin test, I am going to call the handles "Delrin". All-in-all a solid knife with excellent walk and talk. The price was right. ::tu::

Take a straight pin, safety pin or needle, heat it to red hot and touch it to the handle in some inconspcuous spot, if it melts it's way into the handle it's plastic (delrin), if not it is probably bone.

T.J. your 45x microscope will give you the answer to that in just a short-short. Dig it out and take a peak.

That's a fine pair you've gloomed on to.

Hey Jerry, I've looked at it pretty closely and it does not appear to have any of the pores we look for in bone. The handles are very hard and do have a ring to them.

Yeh, Tommy, I know. But it is stamped Primble and a Boker. It's solid and has great walk and talk and the price was really right.

I sure am. I've been chasing Chris for a while now. The Wolf and Crouch are a little hard to find, especially when you're looking for them.

Thanks Robert. It's my understanding that the Chris Wolf and the Jess Crouch knives were hand made and hand-hammer forged and the hammer marks are clearly visible on the pair that I have

........t. j.,i was just referring to delrin as a mat'l as opposed to bone.....the handles look good.......some of the delrin on my Camillus knives looks great and is very hard to tell from bone!!.............. ::tu:: ...........................

Both are good-looking knives regardless of handle materials. I always appreciated a delrin that could pass for bone...

I have tried this on "junk" knives and it works. But where can you find an inconspicuous place on a knife handle without taking it apart, when you have a knife you don't want to leave a mark on if it turns out to not bone?

David, your better bet is to get one of these 45x Mini-Microscopes off eBay for a dollar or two (shipped). Yeah, it comes out of China, Singapore or Hong Kong but even though it takes several weeks, so far I've always gotten what I bought.

With one of those, it's easy to tell the difference between Delrin® and bone.

Thanks fellerz ::tu:: I am happy with both the knives. The Primble does not appear to have been used very much, the blade well is very clean, as are the cap lifter and can opener. I'm guessing post WWII into the early to mid 50's, two piece can opener.

Glad the Wolf arrived safe Tom, if any one is looking for Crouch, I still have one. These are solid built knives with tons of history.
