The Swiss and French Attack

Post by tank »

I have been bombed by Allies and I couldn’t be happier.
The first one was from Switzerland via Mild (not Wild) Bill. It’s a sweet little 58mm Victorinox in Sterling silver. The tang stamp dates it between 1975-2005 but the hallmarks have me baffled. If anyone can help me identify them I would really appreciate it.

Then the French arrived via Woseyjales in the form of an Opinel #7 in carbon. Wosey had put his famous “Pocket Wore” treatment on it by rounding off the sharp angeles then sanding the handles down and restaining them bringing out the wonderful grain. It looks and feels wonderful. He really does a fantastic job.

Thank you two fellars very much! You both blew me away with your kindness. Keep your eyes open for retaliation.

As far as I can tell the sterling silver knife (although Swiss in origin) was finished and sold in London by Alfred Dunhill in 1981. This is one of the benefits of the British hallmark system, you can trace things back for hundreds of years (although not that far back in this case).

Thank you, sir. I really appreciate the info. Dunhill looks like a highend men's store. The knife is really high quality.

Yes they are. If you ever come across a Dunhill lighter cheap, snap it up, there is a big collectors market for these.

Great knives Tank. For future reference, the Lion Passant is the UK sterling silver (.925) mark and the leopard's head mark means the silver was assayed in London. The other English marks that you may likely see are a crown for Sheffield and anchor for Birmingham. In addition to these marks, the silver item will have the maker's mark and a letter code for the year. I hope this helps.

Had a couple of Dunhil pipes and a crystal Dunhill ashtray for pipes and cigars awhile ago,but gave them to a friend who owns a tobacco store.
