So Where've Ya Been?... Souvenir Knives

Post by Joe Dirt »

I some how acquire a lot of souvenir knives. ::shrug:: I never set out to collect them
and have never been to any of these places...

I thought it would be interesting to see how many different places we can come up with
and any stories that may come along with them.

Here's a few to get started.

I think we should all send Mr. Dirt a knife from our particular area, or a business knife we have in our desk and see just how much we can broaden his collection. Joe publish your mailing address and watch what happens! This could be a interesting opportunity for us all.

Dave, I don't know what you're setting me up for, but I'm all in! ::paranoid::

This knife is a coincidence, guarddog. I had to look up Benson's to see what it was when I got the knife a few years ago. There is some video on you tube of what's left of it.

That '04 Worlds Fair is a neat one, SK! ::tu::

Well, now you're making me wish I had picked up souvenir knives during my travels instead of refrigerator magnets.

I did a lengthy response and it didn't seem to post??? The savage 99 is like old vintage knives. They were made with quality .

If it were to be made today they would have to do it in China to be competitive. The last Models they made in the "99" were pressed checkering instead of cut. The wood was poor quality and it went the way of all un-appealing products. The rotary magazine went to a clip.
Bad thing. Ruined the look and feel for me.

Mr. Savage was striving for a military contract when he set up his factory. Quality and reliability were foremost. He failed with the Military, except the Canadian Mounted Police. They carried a Musket Model.

How did you know of my interest in the "99"?

What is the caliber you show there in that beauty??

Gringo, will you please bring me a souvenir knife from your solar vacation to Kepler?
(I don't want no stinkin t-shirt ::huff:: )

Another neat knife, SK! It seems funny as how many souvenir knives are imports. ::shrug::

Marked Solinder Foreign. German made, English Import? I assume souvenir sold at monument in Central Park commemorating the explosion of the Navy Ship Maine in Havana on February 15, 1898. 266 Americans lost their lives. Note mis-spelling of Havana - HABANA Maine - MAIN ::hmm::

Cynthia, I think what you have is a genuine souvenier from Habana (we spell it Havana) Cuba. Compare the monument picture on the knife handle to the one that was erected in Habana in 1926 (top picture). The eagle was torn off in 1961 after Castro and the Communists took over. The second picture below is the New York Memorial to the Maine, located at the southwest corner of Central Park.

Oh my gosh, you are right. So blade import from Germany to England? Sold in Cuba. Ends up in Texas. That little knife has been around. Just curious, why is this type of knife a called a lobster fob?

Jerry, thanks for the info!

Please excuse my absence. But I's be back! ::paranoid::

Dave O sent me this Yellowstone Park souvenir Bowie knife! ::ds::

"Living off the land" is the way Dave likes to put it, as he builds his own lento for shelter,
fishes for lunch, and bow hunts small varmint for dinner while camping in the forest.

Legend has it, Dave O was doing some camping in the Yellowstone Park several years back.
While on an afternoon hike, Dave O heard a commotion off through the underbrush.
Dave rushed to find the root of such a disturbance.
Emerging from the brush, Dave had come upon a group of hikers, stunned and panicking, as
they watched with terror as a LARGE grizzly scampered off through the foliage with a young boy
clinched be his jacket, in his teeth.
Instinctively, Dave lurched forward after the beast, grabbing it by the tail, while socking it in the
nose. The bear, in a bit of sock, dropped the child, and made way into the heavy thicket, not to
be seen again.

Dave O, being the modest man he is, simply shook it off as if it were nothing - just another day
with nature.
Of course the group tried to compensate Dave with anything he requested. Dave simply said
"I didn't do anything anyone else wouldn't have done."

Later, the same evening, the boy approached Dave an gave him a BIG ol' hug, before the group
departed back to civilization.

It wasn't until Dave returned home that he discovered the young man had slipped the souvenir
knife into his pocket!

I will take pride in preserving this knife and story for you, Dave O! ::handshake::

And I thought I had a vivid imagination!

We do have a large bear story in our family history: My Uncle Ammon was just a kid at the sheep herd. A large bear came into the herd and killed some sheep. He and his faithful dog followed it to a large cave and he sent the dog in . The bear came out swiping at the dog , and Ammon shot it with a Single shot .22 rifle he had. The bear whirled and went back into hiding. After sending the dog in 20 times or so and shooting the bear each time it came out, it failed to re-appear. He ventured into the cave and it was dead. He went down hill to a sawmill where a lot of men were and he told the bear story. They laughed at the idea of a little kid killing such a huge mean animal with a little gun like that. He went back to the bear and cut it's huge front foot off and took it to the Mill as proof. They then went and helped him skin it out and it was a family heirloom for many years. This would have occured in the 1890's and is still a favorite story for a father to tell his son while resting on his arm in front of the fireplace. My dad has been dead for 38 years, and I can still remember the chills I got when he would tell me of "Ammon and the Bear".
