Here's a nice little (6"x8") book if you can find it. Some good information and very nice photography.
Good luck in your search. I think your on the right track in looking for books.

The book I always go to the most that I own is Goins (Goins' encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings). It tells you what you have and when it was made.

zed6309, just remember when looking at books with price estimates the true worth of a knife depends on what someone else is willing to pay for it. Condition is subjective as well; one guy's "Mint" is another guy's "Fair." It's all in the eyes of the beholder, hope this helps.
Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!
