I have the same Mini Trapper such a great little knife and I also like the distinctive clip blade. And Oh Man...those blades are sharp as razors out of the factory. And it is the only Trapper I own !! Great knife.ken98k wrote:I have a pretty fair collection of trappers but, I never had a mini until this yellow Case with cv blades showed up last night.
I'm really pleased with it, particularly the shape of the clip blade. I've been favoring smaller pocket knives lately and at 3 1/2" this one seems to be a dandy.
Some of you "trapper haters" may want to try out one of these.

Interesting how Case will put the little blade in front on a Barlow but not on any other two blade knife. Except MAYBE the new teardrop jack.... I don't know.
Looking for the magic penny!

Hey Old Hunter, I have the twin of your Buck 121, except mine has scalers on the back. I think someone told me this one dates to the early to mid 60s. I've had this one for a few years.

Re: Mail Call !-Post your new pick-ups here............
This one came in the mail yesterday. It's my first true custom knife, one I ordered and had built to my specifications. I wanted a truly unique knife in a pattern no one else has. After looking around I found David Taber's (Dr. T) website. I contacted him and he agreed to make a knife for me based on an obscure jack knife pattern I have. I sent him the original knife as well as the handle material I had picked up for the custom piece, and then I waited. This is the knife he made.
There are a few differences between the custom and the original. This version has mammoth ivory scales instead of bone, and it has only one blade while the original has two. The original also has a clip master blade, but this one has a spear. Dr. T and I both felt that with the curves the frame has a spear blade would flow better than a clip and make the knife more aesthetically pleasing overall. The blade is ATS-34. The last picture shows the original next to the reproduction.

Thanks, guys.
Dimitri, the original was made by Wm. Elliot & Co. This one was made in Sheffield. The company also had knives made in Germany and New York. It dates from 1880 to 1918.

Dave, your new custom is fantastic!
Unk, I've seen that version of the 121, you sure have a nice example as those are the oldest ones as I understand it - there is also a thicker version, with and without a blade de-scaler too - guess a man could just collect 121 variations!
Dogg, I'm planning on giving the Buck a try on some fish - I don't fish much, but I'll take it next time I go (probably take a head-boat trip with some other sales reps out of Carolina Beach in mid-September).

Dave, I agree with you about Case knives and their blade and blade nick placement on jack knives. Case is one of my three favorite brands to collect - but usually I have to flip their knives over to open the second blade - but this Barlow is different from every other Case I own - it has a "normal" blade and nick placement. The secondary blade placement is the main reason (besides money of course) that I haven't hit up my favorite Case selling hardware store for a CV Swayback Jack.

I was shocked to discover I didn't have one of these in the long line stamp. I do now. I also picked up a Remington R-14 with wood handles (made by Camillus of course) but I won't get that one for a couple more months. Seller's pictures of the Rem are too bad to post.

Jerry, nice CAM 72 version and good addition to your collection. Have you come up with a "definitive" list of the 72 variations (and the copies by other brands)? I bet you could do a nice article on those knives (history and variations). OH

Re: Mail Call !-Post your new pick-ups here............
Thank you Colonel. The past few days have been very productive (and detrimental to my pocketbook). In addition to the one shown above, I managed to bring home a 1946 1st Gen with Rogers Bone handles that, in the sellers pictures, appears to be in excellent condition for a knife that's almost 70 years old. In addition I grabbed an R14-W Remington. It's the first one I've seen with wood handles. Most likely made by Camillus, it's probably from the early 2000s and comes with it's original box and paperwork. I won't get to see it for a couple of months because to save shipping, my cousin will pick it up locally and give it to me at Cousin's Reunion in September.
I have documented the pile. A few weeks ago, I sat down and entered all of them in an Excell spread sheet. If I knew then what I know now, I would have done it from the beginning. Hindsight is always 20/20, isn't it. Now I just need to remember it's there and keep it up.
As far as writing an article/history on the knives, it would have to be an opinion piece. The only documentation I have to go on is Camillus catalogs and price lists so documented facts are almost nonexistent.

Picked up this cool old Imperial jack yesterday...Given to me by a co-worker who only likes shiny stainless steel knives (silly man) ...It's nice and snappy, no wobble, and the doggone thing even has half stops! Of course it took a razor edge with minimal effort on the stones...
I am starting to accumulate a nice little pile of these colorful old Imperials and Hammers, great knives, and my kids love all the different colors.

I think those old imperials are cool too mike. That's a nice one! I just love that blade steel they used. So easy to sharpen and gets and stays crazy sharp. Nice pick up.
Robert
Re: Mail Call !-Post your new pick-ups here............
Thanks Jerry and Robert! It is scary sharp indeed. Funny how the guy I got it from had a dull modern stainless Case in his pocket, but was eager to unload sweet old Imperial with the great Carbon steel on me as though it wasn't worthy of time in his pocket! Love it, unload all that great old US steel on me, I'll take it all day long...
