Case Tested Corn Knife
Case Tested Corn Knife
How about this one? The seller isn't from KY so there is a chance it's legit. The blade doesn't look right to me and it looks way short for the frame. Also the handle material hasn't aged like most of the older Case knives I've seen. Real or not?

No expert here, but, maybe a hawkbill pruner with a reshaped blade?

That was my first thought too. If it is a modified pruner, whoever reworked it did good work. Did Case actually make a Corn knife? I do not recall seeing a photo of one before.danno50 wrote:No expert here, but, maybe a hawkbill pruner with a reshaped blade?

I don't know if all the Case maize knives were drilled for lanyards or not but that is a question I would want to answer before I would buy or bid. I also don't like that the handle rivets extend past the liners looking at the pic that shows the interior of the knife. The blade pull looks like it could very well be a reground hawkbill blade. I think a maize knife pull should be closer to tang.

Price and Zalesky show a knife just as is pictured in the OP. Page 184 lists a Maize #1, 3 5/8" and a #2, 4". Blade shape, handle material (Cocobolo) and no lanyard hole. I'd have to go with ligit.

Re: Case Tested Corn Knife
I sure can't offer any significant input on the knife but just curious as to the comment about not being from Kentucky. Not getting defensive because I'm from KY but more so wondering if that means a lot of fakes come from here? Or if there is a specific seller on ebay that sells fakes from Ky?

Sure didn't mean to offend anyone. I was actually born in KY and have many friends from there. The reference is to the 2 most noted sellers of altered knives on ebay that are both from KY. Look through the counterfeit thread and you can see the knives they have posted and the comments on the sellers.

I wasn't offended at all and didn't know there was a post where I can find out that info but I'll find it and check it out. It would be nice to have an idea who to watch out for. Thanks.

That's pretty cool knifeaholic that you bought it. Just out of curiosity did you buy it with the purpose of determining if it is legit or do you feel pretty strongly it is?

Well, I certainly can't afford to buy knives just to see if they are legit....Slomo wrote:That's pretty cool knifeaholic that you bought it. Just out of curiosity did you buy it with the purpose of determining if it is legit or do you feel pretty strongly it is?

Re: Case Tested Corn Knife
Ok now that I have this knife (and its a nice minty authentic knife)....
Can anyone tell me what exact use it was designed for?
Case made two sizes. Neither had a pattern number...the catalogs and price lists referred to them as MAIZE #1 (3-5/8") and MAIZE #2 (4"). I have the #1.
I have heard them referred to as "maize topping" knives but I have no idea what that means.

From what I understand, here in the south and Midwest they were also used to detassel corn back in the day to produce hybrid corn.
