Do you think that started out as a deliberate fake, or just someone putting a knife together with parts he had lying around?

Deliberate fake...the main clip blade is a very bad fake of a Case brothers blade.

The frame is a late 70's 63032 frame.

So the seller is known for fake knives? Makes me wonder, I have bought a couple of knives from him myself. Guess I need to be careful buying from him. On the positive side, he has 99.9% positive feedback, so maybe only one in a thousand are fakes.

It seems strange that someone with over two hundred knives for sale would endanger his reputation by knowingly throwing in an occasional fake. Just seems like it would hurt him more than any extra money could possibly help.

I myself have bought several good knives from him. Its just that he puts out these awful fakes sometimes as well.

There are eBay sellers that offer bad knives and their feedback ratings are very high.

myrtlefaye 99.5%

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-VIRGINI ... 1389924670

Feedback left: "Great item and seller!"

tommygg101 99.6%

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Case-Te ... 1479109133

feedback left: "Great Knife. Very pleased."

Unfortunately the eBay feedback system has little or nothing to do with how many fakes you sell but rather it speaks for the buyers satisfaction with the fakes they buy. In other words, if they can't tell it's a fake and they like it all is well. If a seller does sell a bad knife the buyer can tell but the seller then accepts a return all is still well.

sportcolbs rating is 99.9% and he does sell many good knives and the occasional bad knife. It's all money whether the knife is good or bad.

Does he knowingly put out fakes or is he just not knife knowledgeable enough to know the difference? From reading his auctions, I lean heavily towards the latter.

I have a good friend that buys from Bill Swan a lot. He buys ands returns it when he finds out it is wrong. He says that returns are never a problem so he doesn't worry about it.
He says "Bill does know knives."

As far as it not paying when he sells a pearl 8207 "rehandled" for 800.00+ hard to argue that it doesn't pay. Just makes it hard on the honest guy trying to do things right. ::td::

Sportcolbs does indeed sell some legitimate old collectible knives. He also too often sells fakes. ::barf:: I suspect he knows the difference but that's just speculation on my part, under the premise that anyone selling as many knives as he does surely has some knowledge of what they are selling. You just have to be very careful if you buy from him, and sure of what you're buying. Personally I detest counterfeiting to the extent that I won't do business with him. Like Tom says, it just makes it harder for the honest sellers, and gives all of us a black eye. I know a couple of folks that got completely soured on knife collecting after getting burned. Been burned myself a couple of times (not by sporty) but the collecting hook is set too deep on me. ::facepalm::

I believe he knows knives and loves money.

It's funny that the same sellers that knowingly sell bad knives also have a very difficult time seeing handle cracks and repairs. One thing to not know knives but another to not see the obvious.

I'm disappointed in old Sporty, he didn't make the long pull run clean into the tang stamp. ::huff::
