New York Knife, Hammer Brand Scout Knife

Post by ronfish »

I am not as much of a stickler as some knife collectors but let's be realistic for a minute. Using parts that don't belong on a knife REALLY annoy me. ::dang:: This main blade is so far off that it makes me crazy. Then to say that the engraving of H & B is somehow correct or "may stand for hammer brand" is just ignorant. What say you? <steps off soapbox>

That seller is a regular on this counterfeit forum. He should get high marks for his "creative writing". H B - Hammer Brand. Who knew? ::dang::

tommygg101 may be a member of the legal profession:

"...H&B which could be for Hammer Brand or a company name."

Note the use of the word "could" and the disclaimer "or a company name."

What he doesn't state is the obvious truth that we all certainly and he should know: that it stands for Humason & Beckley.

Bingo msteele6! I had intended to research what the H&B stood for, thanks for providing the detail. Here is an artifact with that stamp.....makes you wonder if he hadn't ground the tang stamp off the blade trying to be tricky, if it would have been worth more by itself than a complete NYK Co Scout? ::hmm::

We should send him a note that says "Hey genius, Humason & Beckley called and they want their blade back!!".

I see another problem: the spiral punch.
Wasn't the spiral punch unique to Camillus?

I am no expert on scout knives, but it seems like I recall Tom Williams telling me that only Camillus had the spiral punch. ::shrug::

I may be mistaken, however, I believe that I have seen this variety of spiral punch on an NYK. It is a fatter variety than the Camillus version and I don't think that it had the words"Spiral Punch" stamped on it like many of the Camillus' ones did.

Sellers pictures and photos for posterity.
Bid on this nice "New York Knife Co. Walden" four blade scout knife. Knife has been hand cleaned to near mint condition with only some rub marks. The master blade is stamped H&B which could be for Hammer Brand or a company name. This knife was made in the 1856-1931 time period. The blades are all full with a strong back spring and snap to all 4 with half stops. The handles are beautiful bone with the back side being lighter than the front. Also has the original bale. Knife measures 3 1/2" Long Closed. German Nickel Silver bolsters and front Boy Scout "Be Prepared" Silver Shield. Liners are Brass. This is a nice well built solid knife that would make a nice addition to any good antique knife collection. Fast and Safe Shipping. Thanks.
The master blade is an obvious replacement.

NYK Co definitely had a spiral punch in the 20's & 30's. You can take patent number and run it on Google.

Thanks guys, I stand corrected.
I learned something today. ::tu::

Perhaps what Tom meant was that Camillus was the only one to use the spiral punch in recent years. ::shrug::
Or perhaps just as likely I misunderstood him entirely. ::facepalm::

Perhaps it comes down to the name "Spiral Punch"? Camillus did of course have the spiral punch blade and the awl was marked as such. Here is the punch in question from an old unofficial scout knife (I sold have since sold) with a shield marked Standard Scout.
