Baldwin Coke Bottle folding hunter

Post by btrwtr »

Here is another beauty from one of eBay's most prolific POS peddlers.

How many things can you identify that don't look right with this knife?

Seller's description:

Good stamp. Beautiful rogers bone handles. Baldwin dates from 1874 to 1939 and was considered one of the best of the older brands with excellent steel and quality. Fast and Safe Shipping. I see a few things that may not be right. Before I list them, I must say I know nothing about Baldwin Cutlery  . That said, the shield seems to be sitting a little proud for a knife from that era, or any era. There appears to be epoxy or JB Weld at the edges of the bone and as Basser5 described a knife a few days back, it has a case of "Gaposis". ::shrug::

Looks like this seller has sold one of these rare Baldwins before. This knife isn't a lock blade but appears to have the same exact blade and stamp.

The first knife looks like it has been taken apart more than once. Poorly reassembled.
Pins show in bolster. Not in itself a bad sign but very prominent on this particular knife.
Front head end bolster has a non-typical extra groove near the bone.
The bone handles have dark dye in areas that they should not. Especially in the cutout where the locking bar would be depressed. Handles look to me to be cobbled and poorly fit.
The bone handles do not reach the liners in several areas.
Reverse side tail end bolster also falls short of reaching the liner near back spring. See baldwin 3.
Blade appears to be stainless steel and looks to be in far better (new) condition than the rest of the knife.
I can not make out the stamp very well but can see it well enough to say that it is not authentic.
Looking closely at the the last picture posted here, baldwin 7, there is a small circle visible close to the back square of the blade tang. This could possibly be a pin filling the hole that was used to mount the blades original floating cross guard.
Like treefarmer says this taken apart pos is suffering from acute gaposis. Bent liners, gaps everywhere, misalignment between the locking bar and tail spring.
Head end bolsters are far to rounded off at ends, also indicating the knife has been taken apart. Again heavy wear with a new looking blade.

I am sure that this knife would look even worse in hand.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.
