I'm not making any accusations because truthfully I don't know one way or the other. My books don't show anything like this from Catt. but sometimes that doesn't mean a whole lot. I'm just seeking informed opinions as to the legitimacy of this knife.
Thanks,

Phil

I think it's an Ulster WWII 10th Mountain Division or First Special Service Force knife that has had the master blade replaced with a Catt and a BS shield inlayed sideways on the front handle.

I wonder if the outer curvature of the bail is not marked, "U.S.". He doesn't actually show that portion of the bail.

If it's an Ulster, someone ruined an already collectible and desirable knife trying to make something unique.

Pity, I think. But, you know, I'm just a Robeson collector. The knife might be right as rain.

In my opinion this knife is completely wrong. To my knowledge the only 5 blade knives made by Catt. were lobsters. The first thing you notice is that Catt. never used a round BSA emblem, always square style. The main blade has been reshaped to resemble a spear. What is that blade with the serrations on it ?? Looks like a minnow scaler!! The bolsters look German. I have never seen a flat bale on a Catt.,always round. The grind to get the Phillips to fit looks very fresh. I will say this, someone went to a lot of trouble to build a "fantasy" knife, but not one I would ever bid on.

Not by a long shot!

You are correct in your assesment of the knife. It was an Ulster 10th Mountain Division utility knife, WWII era. It has been severely altered.

The master blade and the screwdriver blade have been added to this knife.
See the closeup pictures of the bolster and you can tell the knife has been re-pinned on that end.

The shield has been added, is facing the wrong way, it is most likely from an original Remington boy scout knife. Also the serreatins on the screwdriver blade and the side of the flat steel bail have been added.

I have shown below what an original Ulster should look like in untouched condition. I have never seen one of these with a flat screwdriver blade, only a phillips blade.

The bail should be marked "U.S.", as Charlie said there are no photos of the bail end.
It most likely is still stamped, or could have been sanded off.

Cattaraugus never made a scout or military knife like this one. It`s a product of someone`s imagination.

Now, MB. Did you not see the rolling eyes after my statement about it possibly being "right as rain"?

Of course, it isn't right. ::barf::

However, I am not familiar enough with all the variants to have called the flat screwdriver blade bogus. Good call on that.

And, your knife is gorgeous!

As an old U.S. Army Special Forces soldier, I feel compelled to remind everyone that these are not just 10th Mountain Division knives.

They were also issued to the First Special Service Force, a joint U.S. and Canadian group with a great history, featured in the movie The Devil's Brigade, and they were the fore-runners of today's Army Special Forces.

It's personal.

Charlie,
Thanks for the added information. I was unaware of this.

Steve,
Thanks! I don`t know where you can find one in this condition.
It won`t cost you your first born, but it sure cost me an Arm and a Leg!

It belonged to my wife's uncle. He was killed in France before the 10th Mountain became the 10th Mountain.

Nice one Willie ::tu::

I don`t recall seeing one of these with that particular style can opener. I thought that style came along later?

I will have to check into this and get back to you.

I contacted the seller of this knife and told him the knife appeared to have the body of an Ulster, the shield from a Remington, and at least one blade from a Cattaraugus. To my surprise and to his credit, he posted my comments at the bottom of the auction page. I guess he's giving all interested parties fair warning that the knife's authenticity may be questionable. That's a lot more than many sellers are willing to do when their knives are called into question.

Here is a link.

Phil,

No matter what he posts people out there will still bid on it, and pay too much for it.

I bought a knife from this seller, it was reasonably priced. When it finally arrived 19 days later, it had a cracked handle. His response was he enlarged the pictures and seen what I was talking about, but it was not a crack. According to him I was looking at the natural grain in the bone!! :o ::doh::

I guess I don`t know what a crack in a bone handle looks like, after all I`m just a novice at knife collecting ::nod::

He blamed the postal service for the late arrival, when I received the package, the date on it confirmed he shipped it 12 days after the sale ::td::
