Just for fun - and just for me

Post by smokepole »

Like Toejammer (I think) I landed a Saber Brand (Japan) Barlow cheap from the Bay. I've never worked with stag before because it isn't something we see a lot of over here, but I did manage to get hold of a couple of Fallow Deer racks (that what you call the horns?) and thought let me give it a go - not going to sell it, it is going to live on my shelf and in my pockets as an EDC. I kind of like it..

I don't know the Sabre brand but the steel seems pretty decent and it took a mean edge. Build wise the Sabre fit is very good - better than on many a modern day factory knife anyway.

Etched it just so's some poor knife historian 500 years from now doesn't get confused and think Sabre did them in stag.... :D
Anyone know more about this brand? They seem fairly commonly available?

Thanks Phil, it is not a very fancy or expensive knife but I like the way it turned out and I think it will see a lot of pocket time....It's getting to where I have to carry 3 or 4 at a time to give them all some pocket time.. ::facepalm::

Thanks Gary, Scott! Garddog, it is good to know they last too - but I can believe it - nothing fancy but built from the ground up! I think your tang is worn a little - on mine is Sabre over Japan over 603...

Toejammer, now don't go grabbing them all - I need a few more too please!

Very good metal in those Sabre Japan knives. As the man said, the Japanese have been making steel a very long time.

Gringo, I live in South Africa in the arid south eastern parts called the Karoo. There are a few game farms that have Fallow Deer but not many and they are not indigenous.

Buck, from what I have seen so far, the Japanese learnt a thing or two in all those years of making steel!

Toejammer, we'll just have to keep looking - I got this one for about $4 + postage and no one else bid on it!! And I am right proud of my Sabre too!

Thanks TJ. When I got the knife I immediately liked it but the plastic scales bothered me, now that it's been cleaned up and wearing stag, I just love it - this one is going to see lots of pocket time. In fact it already is, just now used it to carve up an apple - just can't stop using it!

Thanks bucket. Well, I guess with you losing that Barlow means it is someone else's turn to pick it up and carry it for 3 years... :D
