Camillus TL 29 easy open swell end Jack?

This one started life as a TL 29 Electricians knife - and ended up with a broken tip on the knife blade by the time I got to work on it. So I shortened it a little (blade from bolster to tip is 65mm/just over 2.55"), removed the screwdriver blade and lock, turned it into an easy opener and gave it some Giraffe Bone scales - that I color dyed green with a smooth "rustic" look.

Once again, I etched so as to show it is a custom job and like previously I didn't over clean the blade - I wanted to wash it's face, but not wipe out it's personality, so to speak...

I think it will make a lovely EDC with good bloodlines (Camillus certainly knew their stuff when it came to tempering 1095...) - a new lease on life for a piece of living history so to speak.....

Comments welcome, as always.

It's a beauty! I like the giraffe bone. The color reminds me a little of weathered wood that has algae'd a bit.

What kind of pin stock are you using for the blade pivot on the bolsters? Is it your intent to blend that pin with the bolsters, or are you trying to set the pin apart?

I have had trouble in the past if I left my rough pin too short, then when I peened it, it didn't spread enough to fill the hole. Not sure if that's what you're trying to do there.

Regardless, nice piece, and the etch is a nice touch.

Glenn

Thanks gentlemen - I have to admit I like the way the bone turned out too - just what I wanted!
Glenn to tell the truth, I am waiting for some pin stock to replace that pin with - I had to use the original pin from the old knife as I had nothing that would fit well enough, and it is a little short. I didn't want to take any material off the bolsters, so I used it like that for now. Hopefully the pin stock will arrive tomorrow and I can fix her up - I prefer to blend the pin in if I can. There's a couple of other small touch ups I still want to do too. But thanks for the kind comments!

I like the way you made the handles a little fatter at the bottom end. Nice touch.

Thanks Singing, Jerry - here she is finished, with the new pivot pin in place and blended into the bolsters. Jerry, I kind of like a swell end Jack to swell both ways.. :D

Is the Giraffe bone easy to come by in your part of the world?

Jerry I think if the zoo is close to your home, all you have to figure out is how to smuggle in a saw. ::paranoid::

Jerry, if you buy it, it is fairly easy to come by but it is quite expensive - you are looking at about $50 to $75 for a shin bone - cleaned, but whole and you still need to cook it to remove the fat and marrow. And this price is at the "official" exchange rate - in real terms, if I look at what 1 ZAR buys here and what $1 buys over there, what it costs us in ZAR is the equivalent to about $130 to $170 for a shin bone.
OK, it is a fairly large bone, but often only one or maybe two sides (back and front) are useable as the sides tend to crack and split - so in the end you get much less out of it than you'd think.
You can also buy pre-prepared scales here, un-colored, for about $50 as set (real terms) - about $20 a set on the official exchange rate.
I am trying to get some more shins - I hunted professionally until fairly recently so I know a lot of game farm owners and Professional Hunters and am trying to organize a few. I have in fact been promised some, but I will consider it a done deal when I have the bone in my workshop, as they have to come all the way from Namibia and I am trying to arrange for a lift - transport via the Post Office will kill me due to the weight.
If I get these promised bones I will keep you in mind if you'd like a piece?
